Service Centers

Canon consolidated all their service factories in Canada into one -- the Mississauga Center.

I live too live in Calgary and agree it's a pain. You might want to consider paying for a CPS membership. Gold is about $100 a year. You'll get your gear repaired is about six business days. It's much better than sending your gear in for well over a month with no idea of what they are doing to it.

A fair word of warning, however. The Canon service Center in this country is extremely subpar. They damaged one of my cameras and they made an issue I was having with my 24-70 worse, and then claimed it was within spec.

As far as the sensor cleanings go, I have found that CPS always cleans my sensor and updates my software whenever I send a camera in for a particular reason.

Help me decide: 270EXII vs 90EX

A little old, but still great topic. I was considering buying one of these flashes a week ago and this topic quite helped. I was also looking for something small and light so I could carry it with me on trips and hikes all day long. In this case I don't need the power of Speedlite 430 or 580 / 600 EX, but portability is what really counts.

I decided to buy 270EX II and I feel it was the right decision. It's even smaller than I thought - really compact - and the tiltable head is very useful for indoor shooting.

What I find most exciting is the possibility that some of this technology is going to spill over into other parts of the Canon lineup, most notably the EOS-1D X Mark II and EOS 5D Mark IV.

Kubrick was there exactly 40 years ago with Barry Lyndon. For the common people, say 5D4 18/20Mp, ISO 1Million we shall have to shoot Milky Way stills all over again? ??? And if 5D5 comes with ISO 2Million all over again? I say bring a stunning ISO 100k, the rest is for spec lovers.

Well he used f/0.7 lenses, that's not quite the same thing.

He used the 0.7 lens, but it was on the Academy format (22mm x 16mm) and then matted down even more to 1.66:1, or 22mm x 13mm, so it gave the same dof as an f1.2 lens on a ff camera.

Technical details for sure, but we are talking about cutting edge 'ultra low light level filming' with the aid of left over NASA lenses! But the kicker to all of this is Barry Lyndon was shot at 200 iso (on EI 100 film stock and pushed a stop in development), that is 14 stops brighter than this Canon ME20F-SH and people are still dissing it!

Oh how times change.........

Teardown: Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art by LensRentals.com

I love the work that Roger does. It's always so vital to the craft!
I think that it's fantastic that the Canon 35mm f/1.4LII is so incredible optically and physically. Actually stunning....part of the asking price is justified just by the consistency of each lens to "hit the mark".
I picked up my Sigma for under $800 overseas. I can't justify the $1800 for a 35mm prime..(wish that I could), but clearly that lens is worth its price...and it would seem that my lens is worth its price.
What's cool about this situation is that if a great image was shot with both lenses simultaneously ....the image quality difference in reality is moot. Academic. The image would come through in both instances. That is pretty cool.
I wonder how the build on the Sigma holds up to the Canon 35mm f/1.4L I? I'm curious now...since even that lens is still commanding $1100, currently.....

That is somewhat true (re image quality), but the new Canon is definitely in another league. Think Canon L to Otus. The 35L II has better contrast, color, and overall resolution, and I find that images just look more "special". The drawing is better with the L lens, though that probably won't show up on any chart testing. I've been using the lenses side by side in my review process, and for critical moments I find myself reaching for the Canon every time.

I am happy you point this out. I don't think MTF charts is a proper tool to evaluate the quality of a lens. It tells quite a bit, of course, but your real world testing are way more important to me. Looking forward to your review of the 35 L II!

Canon Introduces New EF 50MM F/1.8 STM Lens

umm yep - right.

There are two distance measurements -
Minimum Focusing - measured from the image plane - that little circle with a line through it...
Minimum WORKING distance, measured from the front element.

Perhaps there is a 3rd for those who walk and Macro (me) distance from the lens hood.

It give my wife levity when we go to the local botanical garden and start chasing insects w/ my 70-200 and an extension tube!! Everyone should try this sometime, it is a blast.

Does that setup work well? I've considered it as an alternative to a 180mm macro lens, and would appreciate any insight you might have...

Patent: Canon EF-M 55mm f/3.5 Macro

English USPTO patent application: US20150323764 A1

In comparing example 3 to JP,2006-153942 (I believe this is the patent that embodied by the existing EF-S 60mm f2.8 Macro), it seems quite possible that this is going to be the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro II, or the EF-M 60mm f/2.8 Macro.

Comparing the distortion graphs, example 3 compares quite well to 2006-153942.

I pressed post to fast:

The attached picture shows what a monster the Tammy 15-30 is.
All real estate I save in my bag by changing on the 24-70 side from Canon to Tamron is more than eaten up by the 15-30 which is felt twice as heavy than the Canon 17-35

If anyone has switched lenses same way as I than I would be happy to hear from you. ALso if selling out a Red Ring for a Tamron leaves any emotional scar tissue in the long run....

I have not switched lenses, but I recently bought the Tamron 15-30. You are right, it is a beast. I really do like it. I think it is well worth the money. It is an excellent lens and the weight does not bother me at all. I like a heavy lens... especially if I've spent fairly big money on it. Congratulations on a wise decision purchasing this lens.

Is it safe to put a "charged" battery back into the charger?

It really is amazing that more of our current devices don't blow up.

I did a bit of research into RC cars a few years ago and they recommend that Lithium Polymer batteries never be charged unattended, because they melt down in a blaze of acid flames when they go.
Common practice is to put them in a fireproof bag when charging.
Of course those are often half pound batteries being stressed to destruction, so it's not the same application, but Lithium based cells are generally less stable, especially compared to NiMH (but NiMH specifically sucks for RC, they just drop voltage way too fast).
Good batteries have circuits that artificially shut off the battery before anything serious happens though, thus the you don't hear about more than a few cell phones exploding every year.
