The Canon RF 35mm f/1.4L VCM is in stock, deliveries to customers start June 27

I'm not an MTF charts guy, but I also am hesitant to embrace lenses that are starting to lean more and more into digital correction and AI (more closed-source, proprietary software; waiting for R5 camera profiles was a debacle that soured me). For premium prices, I expect premium glass/optics whether I use it for weddings, traveling, or charts and diagrams on my wall. I have been holding out for a 35mm for several years now. Admittedly, the wedding photos above are some of the best examples that I have seen yet, but they are but one use case. I have no problem if this camera scratches the itch of other Canon shooters. I am not sure though I understand the need to disparage reviewers who have a different (but I think fair) take on this lens. And I neither want to be an apologist for Canon or give in to a sunk cost mentality.

That's not to say I have completely written this lens off. I have not personally tried it yet. I'm sure at some point I will, and I too may decide that it is satisfactory for me. But as it stands, (particularly the gearing of it toward video features that will not benefit me, and the deepening reliance on digital correction and AI), I will hold my fire to see if that 1.2 photography-centric 35mm is on the horizon.

R3 can focus stack with flash but R5 can't ?

Focus bracketing uses electronic shutter. The R5 cannot use a flash in electronic shutter mode, the readout speed is too slow. The R3 has a stacked sensor that yields a readout speed fast enough to use flash with electronic shutter, so it can use the flash for focus bracketing.

The R5 II has a stacked sensor and will be able to use flash with electronic shutter (at a max sync of 1/160 s). Most likely, the R5 II will be able to focus bracket with flash.

Canon EOS R1, EOS R5 Mark II & More tomorrow at 6:00AM EDT/12:00PM CEST

My preorder is in, but I'm getting cold feet. I was hoping that the readout speed would be on par with the R3, but that's not that big of concern if the AF is as improved as suggested. What gives me pause is that I can't for the life of me think of what lens(es) I'd use to harness this great tech. I've got the 100-500L, which is okay but not comparable to an exotic prime for wildlife shooting. I'm not spending $10k plus for one of Canon's, and I'm not being a used EF lens, so there's no lens that fits my needs or on the horizon. A 600mm DO would be perfect, but I'm no holding my breath. So, I'll likely cancel that preorder until there is a compelling long lens offering in ZF.
A 600 DO would be at least as expensive as the current f/4, unless it was narrower aperture. And whaddya know, there is a narrower aperture RF 600 DO - the f/11! :p

Canon EF 200 f 2.8 V EF 200 f2 focusing speeds

Occasionally I find situations photographing flying birds that need a 200mm lens. An example would be on big sea cliffs with strong winds. I use a 200mm as its easier to track a non linear flight than the 300 f 2.8. I have got some great shots with the EF200mm 2.8L but I wonder apart from the weight and cost would a EF200 f 2L do any better with focusing speeds ?

We keep hearing about the Canon EOS R6 Mark III coming in 2024

How very very true. I often find myself bringing back details in shadows and highlights as needed. There is much more latitude with today's sensor that there was a decade ago.
I edit this way too for the most part.

Having recently edited 5DS and R files almost side by side, though, I found the difference to be not as great as it might seem. The R files are a bit more flexible overall, yes, but if the highlights were gone on one camera, they were typically gone on the other as well.

I’m at a point where I want to reduce the amount of time editing and increase the amount of time shooting, so I’m doing what I can to get the OOC result as close to final/satisfied as I can get.

The Canon EOS R5 Mark II – We have now seen it

"We have now seen..." More rumors? I feel after 2 years, it is time for some facts...Where seen? When seen? Being used by who ? Why can't post? And equally important, who is the "we" that have seen?

Anyone who sees the new bodies is made to sign an NDS, hence the lack of information out there. Hold for a couple more days and there will be plenty online about them.

Throwback Review: Canon Rebel 300D

My first digital camera when it was just known as the Digital Rebel. Used it for 10 years until I bought the 6D. What I learned was that you needed to more than double the MPs to really make a difference, as I thought I would replace this camera with the 12.2 MP 450D, but then didn't. (Yes, I know there are exceptions if you need to crop a lot). Also learned that crop cameras did certain things better for me when I bought the 6D, and then bought a crop camera to supplement the full frame, which I still do to this day (and shoot the crop cameras far more often than the FF).
