5DS/5DSR - manual focus assist

I don't think the MF is that much more difficult on my 5DsR than on my 5d2. Live view with 16x magnification or focus confirm in viewfinder works great. Please not from lenses below, that I mostly shoot MF.
Shutter release cable; of course! It is surprising that this is a new revelation to some people. Additionally it applies just as much to other small pixel dimension bodies such as 7D.
External display seems overkill to me. But if it works for you, great.
Unfortunatly not all the people have sharp enough eyes to work with the small display on Canon body.
I am among them so always was looking for something that could help.
Small and light external monitor which has focus peaking feature is very handy.
Was surprised by remark about remote control.
Point was not that this is something new but that with high magnification you can know when camera vibration is over and you can press shutter release on remote control.
Do you think that people do not know what remote shutter control is used for?
Very funny.
As for me I use it for about 50 year already )))

5D3 - shooting stills while shooting video = dead camera

I was suspicious that the third-party battery might have been at fault, so when I got home I put it back in the camera and everything worked fine.

It is possible the third party battery got much hotter than a first party battery would have, causing the camera to overheat.

This seems to be the best diagnosis. This has never ever happened to me. It is perfectly ok to shoot still while doing video....

Bali: Bikes, Bikinis, Boots, Boards and Bars

Thanks Click, Lukas,

Lukas, where else would you recommend we go in Bali that we missed, beyond what we did in our ten days?

Surfing Echo Beach (https://youtu.be/R_ZUPj4kAeE?t=1679)

Diving the reefs, cliff jumping and paddle boarding in Nusa Lembongan (https://youtu.be/R_ZUPj4kAeE?t=475)

Climbing the volcano Gunung Agung (https://youtu.be/R_ZUPj4kAeE?t=875)

Hiking and swimming in the waterfalls of Munduk (https://youtu.be/R_ZUPj4kAeE?t=1263)

We rang out of time to do Uluwatu this time. It would be great to have your advice for next time...

Thanks,
Fil

Wide-Angle Zoom MTF and Variations

I'd also wonder if putting your money into a 5Ds series camera would bring more apparent improvement to your images than the cost of upgrading lenses. I expect someone to study this, but the information is not yet available. If you do not need high ISO, you may get sharp images with a consumer lens that match or even exceed those from a high end lens with a 5D MK III or 6D. That could be the rare case where putting money into better lenses is not the best use of your $$.

So far the verdict is clear - high mpix sensors go best with high end glass. High mpix also improves lower end glass. But the real advantage is with the high end.

For the longest time, Canon's branding has been such that the smaller the number, the better the camera.

Which is better, 750D or 70D? 1000D or 750D? 5DIII or 1DX? 6D or 5DIII? 7DII or 70D?

Which is better, 100D or 700D?

Which is harder to say out loud and not giggle 70D, or Kiss X?

Isn't Kiss X a radio station?!

Just kidding. Of course the 1D X Mark II will have (at least 14fps), it does that already with the mirror locked up.

I think we can expect far greater things from the 1D X Mark II than these poor rumours.

50mm f/1.8 STM photos I could not obtain with my 50mm f/1.8 II copies

Luds34 said:
Good to hear, I've been tempted to pick one up to use as my "85mm" lens on the M. Throw in the 22mm and that's a nice little kit.

Watch out though as the AF is extremely slow when used with the EF-EF-M adaptor. The image quality is great but trying to get pictures of anything that moves is frustrating at best.

Just to clarify the AF on other cameras such as the 6D is fine.

Really wish we could get a small EF-M 50 1.8 which would go well with the recent M3's improved AF speed and give a very decent portrait / people option.

canon 7D2 with 100-400 ii lens with 1.4 Extender for birds

AlanF said:
A full 6 months on I have gone through a nearly 180 deg change in opinion. In good light and with improved technique, the 7DII + 100-400mm II + 1.4xTC is my favourite combination for small birds at a distance.
Really appreciate your posts and insights AlanF. I must say that after a winter of photographing Aussie sports with the 7Dii and 300 f/2.8 ii with and without the 1.4xii, I much prefer to go without the extender and crop as required in post. The light is just not good enough for the sharpness I crave at 1/2000s and it seems to struggle in AI servo.
I am about to take the plunge on the 100-400 ii for a trip to Zambia and am hoping to be able to replicate your results with the 1.4 extender. Weight restrictions probably mean I will have to leave the 70-200 f/2.8 ii at home. Hopefully the 300ii and 100-400 with extenders will do the trick.

5DX/5DIV announcement Q1 2016?

Lol...that's courageous! Well done! I am 51 and today you never know if there is a gun included...So not making me the hero in this case was the better choice, as it happened in southamerican country. But anyway, crime doesn't respect any frontiers. It could happen to me anytime in the whee whee hours in Switzerland as well, as I love to do nightphotography...
I'm sorry for your loss. Some people can be such assholes, at least there are a few good people as well that can make up for the bad experiences in life. I hope you were not injured and that insurance will replace everything.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II Coming in at 24mp? [CR2]

arbitrage said:
I'm patiently waiting for a 1DXII. For me to upgrade (currently shoot 1DX and 7D2 (5D3, 1D4 sometimes)) I think this camera needs more than just a MP and FPS bump.

I would like to see a couple things in order to really motivate me to be a early adopter at say $7000 price point:
1) Some improvements to AF...should have at minimum all x-type points like 7D2 and ideally could give us many more f/8 points.
2) Improvements to high-ISO Dynamic Range...who cares about low-ISO DR in a camera designed for sport and wildlife...we need DR above ISO 400, not below it...
3) Continuing high ISO noise improvements although I still find the 1DX high ISO noise to be very good and I could live without improvement in this area.
4) Would be nice to see pricing return to 1D4 levels and hopefully at least not expand to 1Ds3 levels.

I also would think this camera will need to adopt CFAST cards as the CF are already saturated at 1DX speeds/resolution. If we do need CFAST to get higher FPS at higher MP then I hope Canon just goes all in and puts dual CFAST slots even though that will mean extra entry cost to buy new cards. I really hope they don't go the Nikon route and mix the slots (one CFAST, one CF)...I hate mixed slots on 5D3 and 7D2.

Anyways, I've avoided trying out the 5DS/R and will try to avoid any 5D MkIV/X temptation and save my pennies for this 1DX2 camera.
Along with your point (1), I hope there will be f/5.6 cross-types in the left and right columns. The current array 1D-X and 5D-III is only cross-type with f/4 or faster lenses. I predominantly shoot with f/2.8 lenses for my work, but when I'm casually shooting wildlife I use f/5.6 or f/6.3 zooms so the peripheral points are essentially operating as line type.

I completely agree with the card slots. Mixed card-types is annoying on my 1Ds-III and 5D-III.

A7rii vs 5DSr, look and noise level

wockawocka said:
Hi guys, I'm just dropping in to say I shot a wedding yesterday and my second had a Sony A7rii.

Firstly that silent shutter is SEXY - But, the Noise levels are roughly the same until ISO3200 and then the 5DSr takes the lead. The A7rii is about a stop worse above ISO3200 than the 5DSr.

Further, correctly exposed images appear to be more pleasing from the 5Dsr. Nothing wrong with the A7 files they just appear warmer and a little less defined. Good files though.

At some point I'll do a full vs, but we were looking at real world use more than gravel pits that were 5 stops under exposed. ;)

Thats strange , opposite conclusion then rest of the reviewers out there.
