Canon 7D Mark II - DXOMark Review

Here is the canon gelatin 52 (mark 1 version). There is simply a door that opens and the filter drops in. Definately only room for the 48mm. The 52 glass won't fit.

I also checked the 52WII gelatin filter on my 300 mkii and it's the same. Glass is about 45mm in diameter and it pops right out once you open the trap door.

Wow. I've had my lens nearly 18 months and had no idea you could flip the filter open like that!

It's designed so you can insert a gelatin filter in there and close the door to hold it in place. There is not much of a ledge to hold the glass I place so likely if the filter was 44mm it may not hold it in and you would need to fabricate a shim to support it. In the case of my lumicon deep sky filter it is exactly 45mm and fits perfectly in the holder.

Hoping some of the other AP filters are the same.

Never used a gel filter, so I never noticed :) I'll definitely look at this for LP filters though. I've perched my Astronomik APS-C filter in there, but it would sometimes fall into the lens cavity as it wasn't attached by anything.

Interesting sales data from B&H

As I'm not currently in the market for a new camera body, I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to many of the sales that were going on for black Friday and cyber Monday. Nevertheless, it did seem as though a number of retailers had better deals on Nikon gear, and I was curious to see if it generated any more sales. This morning, B&H sent out a link to see their sales ranking data - as far as I can tell, it is only for cyber Monday sales.

I don't know if this says anything about the state of the market, but I did find it interesting nonetheless.

Full Frame Sales:

1) Nikon D750 (Body only)
2) Nikon D810 (Body only)
3) Nikon D750 (w/ 24-120)
4) Canon 6D (Body only)

8) Canon 5D Mk III (w/ inkjet printer)
9) Canon 5D Mk III (w/ 24-105)
10) Nikon D4S (Body only)

APS-C Sales:
1) Nikon D3200 (w/ 18-55 & 55-200)
2) Nikon D7100 (Body only)
3) Canon Rebel T5i (w/ 18-55)
4) Canon 7D Mk II (Body only)
5) Canon Rebel T3i (Body only)
6) Canon Rebel T3i (w/ 18-55 & 75-300)
7) Canon Rebel T5 (w/ 18-55)

Patent: Contact Cleaning Body Cap

MrFotoFool said:
Who is getting all these "pesky contact errors?" I have been using EOS cameras (first film then digital) for almost two decades and have not once seen that message on my camera or anyone I know.

I've seen it sporadically on my 6D ever since I got the thing—about once every couple of months. It occurs with different lenses (including an adapted lens with only a focus confirmation chip and no other electronics), so the problem is clearly with the body contacts being inadequate.

7DMKII Focus keeper rate ideas?

Hi Pedro.
Ok I now have a better idea of DPAF. So yes it would improve AFMA accuracy if it were enabled, and like you I don't understand why it is not.
As for it not working on all Canon lenses, or any 3rd party lenses that seems ludicrous to me but I guess there may be technical reasons for this and they're not just being bloody minded. :'(

Cheers, Graham.

racebit said:
Well Graham, yes, you are right, standard contrast detection can be used to calibrate PDAF.

Snip snip.

Furthermore DPAF can only be used with Canon lenses and not all of them. Ridiculous, when the concept should be used even with manual lenses.
So, again, to me DPAF is a useless piece of crap. Sorry to say that. I will still buy the 7D2 anyway, but obviously not for the DPAF.

High ISO speed NR? (7D Mark II)

neuroanatomist said:
It's NR applied to in-camera JPGs at higher ISOs, no effect on RAW. I shoot RAW, and I leave it off. If enabled, it can slow down frame rates at high ISO – even when shooting RAW, since the camera generates a JPG preview image with all the active settings (picture style, ALO, white balance, etc.) that's stored in the RAW file container (it's also what you see on the main LCD review, and used to generate the histogram and highlight warning).

Do you know if/believe this kind of processing may slow down the Rebels, EOS M etc, Neuro?
I've never looked too much into it but asides from card-write speed and even shooting RAW or Jpeg, I'm sure these cameras lag at times way before their paper-specs would have us know. The SL1 in particular...

Maybe, Canon does deserve the negative criticism, due to this

oooh, I get it... "a small package", the lens, like the child is relative to the dog/world. Aaaah, punderful!

I was so fixated on the story that I didn't really take in the ad at first. I guess advertising anything else small it would simply be a pun... But they're a camera and lens manufacturer trying to shift lenses, so... Yeah. Canon execs, you silly sausages!

My DIY.= Make BETTER BEAMER = Better in longer distant

NancyP said:
great idea, Surapon. What lens and camera sensor format (APS-C, presumably) did you use for "BB11" and "BB12"? The flash almost covers the field of view there, so one could calculate the usable flash coverage. Depending on the subject, light falloff could be useful or problematic.

Dear Friend NancyP.
That Photos BB-11 and BB-12 might be my 1DS Full frame Sensor with 70-200 mm at least 7-8 years ago.
Yes, With in Next 4-7 Days, I will test the Flash+ DIY Better Beamer AREA COVER and DISTANT from Flash to the Subject too.
I will report back to you.
Good night.

Field review of the new Canon 100-400

Wow. It was my impression as well that the lens barrel would not extend. Judging from the photo, it does. That is one thing that I love about my 70-200 f4: The physical size never changes. It looks like the pump action is gone, anyway. I worked in the motion picture biz and one cameraman I worked with loved the 150-600 which he had converted at an Arri PL mount. As far as the dust sucking thing, it seems to be more of a rumor than anything. A few specks of dust inside a lens should have no effect on the IQ as far as I know. I am looking forward to this lens!

Is there any new information considering shipping dates (preferably in Europe)?

Hope to be able to take it with me on my trip to the US at December 22nd ....

I'd hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I pre-ordered the day it was announced in the Netherlands, and expected delivery is the 29th.

Lens Caps from Lenzbuddy

I thought id pass along a Cyber Monday deal (50% off today) on custom lens caps. you can send them your vector file of anything or a large jpg. they tell you more on the site. I really do like mine. I think you have to like them on FB for the discount. http://promo.lenzbuddy.com/facebook-cyber-monday/

now if the 5DII/24-105L/Pixma-10 goes on sale like the others , im in deep trouble ;D some camera deals out there make me wonder if there aren't some new models coming very soon. seems like they are getting those cameras out of inventory at really low prices. I like checking back on here to see if the 6D/5DIV is going to happen.
Cheers.

If you've got a decent body and decent lenses, the next most important thing is-

Tanispyre has a good point about alarm clock. In my case, the alarm clock s the phone, which also hosts the Photographers' Ephemeris app, which tells you when to set that alarm.

Of course, if you want to photograph first light or last light, you need a tripod / head (clamp, plate) / remote shutter release system. Also, every photographer should have a polarizer filter.

Patent: Sensor Technology

I think Canon continue to show excellence in Camera sensors, this helps maintain a lead. The real issue Canon have to address is the processing path from the sensor to the electronics. If they match the approaches and capabilities of the competition then the best sensors, would really shine and probably need 16bit files to do them justice. All the difference in the sensor market for DR and IQ sits in this electronics space. Sensors can and will improve but if you don't manage noise between the sensor and the electronics then you loose both.

I would get really excited about the ADC moving on sensor chip, then these sensor improvements would have a platform to really excel.

Hi Folks.
Really loving the replies, the humour is great.
I showed her some of the replies, some she laughed at, the ones recommending purchase were met with one of those withering looks, I daren't buy one (unless one of you guys with more than one feel the urge to both downsize and be charitable! :o :D) the thought of being neutered metaphorically if not literally scares me!

Cheers, Graham.

It's easier to separate from a kidney than a stone - it will probably be easier to sell the first one also. I hope it works out for you and the "local government".

Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS + Canon 2x EF extender III (preferably on 7D II)

if its reach you want the amount you proposed for a 300is l combo is equal to a 100-400l mk 1

or even a 400l 5.6 1.4 tele combo both option give more reach and better iq.

also the Tamron 150-600 is also in this price range I was going the route you describe. but if

the Tamron was not back ordered I will have gotten the Tamron.

Even better, make a hybrid device...one that can operate mirrorless with an EVF if the user chooses, or switch back to mirrorslapping OVF mode on demand.

Such a device would indeed be BIGGER. But you might still not like it, since it would be fairly top-heavy with a "really big hump" to accomodate both: [an even more more complex] viewfinder prism AND the EVF [panel+electronics]. :P

Not necessarily. If your mirror is reflective on both sides, you could design the camera to use the mirror in all photographs, with the mirror pivoting in the center. Then, place the sensor at the bottom, facing up. Place the LCD at the back of the camera, facing towards the lens. When taking a picture, or when in live view mode, flip it so that the mirror reflects light from the lens down into the sensor, and from the LCD panel up into the OVF. :)

That idea is even better! :D Either way, however you do it, there are ways of fitting an EVF into a camera with a standard mirror-slapping OVF. I'll take it however it's designed.

Amateurphotographer.co.uk - 7D ii review of 21st November 2014, DR surprise!

Policar said:
You can't tell, but if you've been spot metering scenes for years (which any of us shooting MF and LF I'm guessing have) you can easily guess

In defense of my 6d's metering, I'm probably not using it as I'm supposed to because there's no mode that does what I want. I'm mostly at eval, but often don't have the time to use exposure lock. As eval takes the active af point into account - and that's the center at the 6d - it tends to screw up after recompose. It's just that my 60d didn't have that amount of variance like the 6d does, the metering seems to be tuned better on the long-running crop system.

With center-weighted metering it's better, but then you either have to track with the center or be really careful to use expo lock all the time. I wish there would be a "dumb" eval metering that simply matrix-averages the scene and prevents blown highlights :-\ ... esp. on the 6d it's usually no problem to raise shadows.
