Canon Celebrates Significant Milestone With Production Of 110 Million Interchangeable EF Lenses

Congrats to Canon. Yes Indeed. As for the debate over numbers, a lot of people have been using the same Canon glass for a decade or longer. And why? Cuz they were great when they came out and they still are! Sure the newer ones made improvements (think 70-200 IS II) but the original without any IS was and is still a great lens that people still buy and use.

20 years later people like me still herald the greatness of the 135L, which is STILL sold brand new. If in the next 12 months Canon pops out new iterations of a 35 and 50 L ... they're gonna have a big jump again in L sales cuz it seems apparent to me a lot of people are chomping at the bit for that to happen.

I'm not sure the same can be said for other companies in the same regard.

Keep up the fine work of grinding and polishing!!!

Question on focus speed -Tamron 70-200

I have owned a Tamron 70-200 VC for about 15 months and had no problems. I mainly take photos of family activities, friends and my kids sports teams which I share with the school, sports club and other parents.
I encountered a problem when I was taking photos of our two family dogs chasing a ball being thrown by my wife. I had positioned myself so that the dogs would be running towards me -( I was going for the ears flapping type of shot ) my 5D3 was set to AF expand (9pts) at center point. AF mode in case 5(erratic movement and speed). I shot at various apertures and shutter speeds ranging from 1/1250-2000 in burst mode. the resulting pictures the dogs were blurred and I'm not really sure what went wrong. At first I thought it was motion blur, it was too much blur to be the F-stop but I went down to F7.1 just in case.
Could it have been the VC-the minimum shutter was 1/1250 so I didn't think so. Could I have just completely missed?????
I am a bit embarrassed by the result but I'll post a typical example of what i'm talking about :-[

New Lightroom HDR

jaayres20 said:
Not a big time HDR guy, but the new HDR merge in Lightroom CC is really nice and works exactly better than anything I have used in the past. It basically takes a bunch of RAW files and makes a new raw file with all the tonal range you would ever need. No photoshop needed. I did this quick test this morning and liked the results. Because I was in a hurry I had to do it hand held and used a high shutter speed 1/250 at f/5. I just went through ISO 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, and 6400 so the IQ is not as good as it could have been, but it still turned out great. Can't wait until I can used it with the 5DSr and a tripod. For some reason it looks terrible until you click on the image.
NICE!

AF switching on the 7D2

That is my point. I view expansion as an extension of single AF point.

This is correct as it just mentions Single is not available in both cases 5 and 6.

rere_zpscrhydhxo.jpg~original

I think Canon made a mistake here. It states it is available in both expansion modes. Case 6 says the same thing. In case 5 TS and Accel/Decel parameters are the same as case 1. The only thing that changes in Case 5 is AF switching.

"Ken's Reviews" thread (below) locked??

I'm not trying to be disrespectful to the mods but... huh? I read the opening post to the thread below mentioning Ken Rockwell's review of Canon. Where did it go wrong? It just says he loves Canon a lot now and not Nikon as much as he used to.

Or is the mere mention of "Ken Rockwell" so charged with controversy that any mention of him begs a censorship? In that case, I guess this thread is next? OK, now I'm being snarky... maybe the mods are on to something...

Seriously, I'm not trying to start trouble, I'm genuinely curious as to what went wrong. Seems a little harsh to me.

Perhaps you did not get a chance to see all the deleted posts. In just a few minutes it had turned into a bashing. I did not remove the original post because it was not bashing KR, but there is something about his name that causes childish behavior, we are not here to bash another person,

DR, Sony sensors, and even DXO are not persons, when things get personal, its time to stop it.

Maybe CR should introduce a new section of the forum and call it "The Ring". No holds barred, gloves off personal bashing allowed without moderation but only in that section. Then, instead of censoring or fighting with members over questionable posts or behavior, the mods could simply move offensive threads into "The Ring" if they crossed a line and not be bothered about censorship duties. Instead of leaving a post that says "post removed by mod", the mod could leave a post saying, "moved to "The Ring" section."

Since this is a Canon forum, maybe call it "The Red Ring" or "The Room of L". Maybe call it "Fight Club". Yes, this is tongue & cheek but also a little bit of a good idea perhaps? And over time it would be easy to see who the rebels on the forum are by how often their posts or threads are moved to the "Fight Club". LOL!

With regard to Ken Rockwell, if I started a website blog type thing myself, it would probably be similar to his and it would probably contain a bit of satire in a similar way, esp if it got entire forums to freak out over it. I figure he loves all the attention. That keeps it more fun and helps him know people are actually paying attention to his site.

Anyone switched focusing screen on 5ds/r?

Valvebounce said:
Hi Zeidora.
Well that clears that up nicely! I did wonder if you were making some sort of mechanical device similar to snail cams to move the subject by the small increments I imagine a scanning electron microscope might need. But real snails 0.5mm that's like a full stop. How can you tell it's a snail, half the time I can't see whether I just did a . or , ! ;D

Cheers, Graham.

Prep is all free-hand manual work; no coffee, and controlled breathing. For imaging, in photography I use a Cognysis StackShot motorized and computer controlled focusing rail for z-stacking. 100 images at 50 µm step-size is impossible to do accurately and consistently by hand. On the stereomicroscope, it has also a motorized focus (i.e., microscope moves up, lens is fix focal). On SEM the stage is 5 axis motorized and amount of movement is dependent upon magnification. At high mag, the stage is stationary and you move the electron beam. Depth of field is greater in SEM compared to LM, so I have not seen the need to do z-stacking on SEM, but I know of some people who have done it.

Re limits of optical resolution, you are right on. For the teeth, it can be difficult to tell if I have then right-side up, or upside down, even with kick-ass stereomicroscope optics (planapo 1.5x on Zeiss DV20). Curl direction can be a clue, as well as sparkly vs smooth-shiny surface appearance when in water. Just the prep is a whole science; wrote a 50 page paper on that.

Re collecting, I collect material from the habitat (sand samples, rock washings, algal shakings) and then sort & identify each particle under the microscope. Hours of fun!

Sony RX100 IV comparison on DPR

Mt Spokane Photography said:
The Lumix results were pretty spectacular, but then, its a 4/3 sensor. When you add in the G1X MK II, it has very close noise to the Lumix. However the Lumix is on the large side as is the G1X. The G7X definitely has more noise at higher ISO's, and the images are not as sharp. However, it has a much wider zoom range, so that compromises a lens design.

Another Panasonic comparison to do is with the FZ1000. It has a 20MP 1" sensor and has been out for about a year. Above ISO 800 the older Panasonic sensor (assuming Pansonic made that sensor) appears to have a very slight noise advantage over the new Sony sensor.

Canon ef-s 17-55mm 2.8 is usm GONE

Just trying to learn a little: Since my crop sensor does not gather as much light as a full frame sensor would... then would that mean an f/2.8 lens on a full frame camera would behave like a slower lens on a crop sensor camera? Example: On a full frame camera with lens X set at f/2.8, ISO 100, 1/250th of a second I get a correct exposure of my subject. If I then take the same lens, settings and subject but use a crop sensor camera... would I have to increase my shutter speed to get the same exposure? If true... then my f/2.8 lenses will seem lightening fast on a FF body compared to crop. Which means the performance of my EF 400mm f/5.6L would greatly improve on a full frame body. Am I correct?

No, you'd get the same exposure on FF as on crop. But the FF image will have lower noise. Accordingly, on FF you could choose to stop down to f/4 for more DoF, or boost the shutter speed to 1/500 s to stop motion, and still have slightly less image noise after raising the ISO to compensate. Now...the noise difference at low ISO isn't much, so in bright light the FF benefits are less. But at ISO 3200, you'll certainly notice the difference.

Thanks again!

Is Yongnuo YN600EX RT as good as a Canon Speedlite 600EX?

lol, just pulled the trigger on a set of these guys (2 plus transmitter). I figure A) it'll lessen the the load on my much more expensive canon flashes, B) act as a backup to my canons, C) use in situations I don't want to risk my canons, D) I would like and would use that second curtain sync off camera (think night portraits where I may want to expose background with a long exposure but use flash for the couple...2nd curtain is nice for that!), and E) AF assist beam would be nice for some reception halls for sure, and finally G) the system is works with canon so I'm not really adding a secondary system.

Note, the fact that the YN system can actually do a few things the canon can't, it's worth it just on that level alone. Cost wise, to add 2 more flashes and a second transmitter (i do roll with 2 bodies and primes) and use the canon system, that's a whole lot more than the $350.

Increasing or decreasing Update circles with current lens technology?

Japanese manufacturing culture (ala Deming https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._Edwards_Deming) is such that there is always and already work on improving processes and products. It is continuously ongoing. Release of new products depends more upon market demand vs profit potential (Return on investment). Design and improvement must march on continuously. No competitive company can afford to sit back and say, "This is good enough for now." Just look at what the Japanese automakers did to the Big Three in Detroit.

I think that's an over-simplification, as

1. Canon is out to make a profit. If there's no profit in an update, it wouldn't happen.

2. Canon resources are limited. If there's more profit in something else, the update wouldn't happen.

As an example, the 20mm f/2.8 wasn't updated in >20 years. The FD 17mm wasn't updated to EF. Canon could have updated it, but chose not to. Maybe it's because there's no profit in the update, maybe because there's more money in other lenses, but bottom line it just didn't happen.

3. Canon can invest something that doesn't have a concrete plan such as 'lens X on date Y', such as new types of glass, new CAD tools, flashes, etc.

Not resting isn't the same as working on <existing lens> mk<current+1>

Items 1 and 2 you list I cover here: "Release of new products depends more upon market demand vs profit potential (Return on investment). Design and improvement must march on continuously.

Item 3: Canon continuously invests in innovation... better ways to grind glass, process improvements, etc...

"Not resting isn't the same as working on <existing lens> mk<current+1>" Product improvement is always happening. Whether an improvement manifests itself a <existing lens> mk <current +1> or as a completely new lens model makes no difference. Engineers at Canon are not sitting round playing checkers because they've got the lens crop so right that they can wait a few years to go back to work.

I fail to see what you see as oversimplification. How complex shall I make my statement? Statistical Process Control, Kaisen, and Continuous Improvement of processes and products is not simple. If you really think that nobody is working on something to improve the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L mkII and all other lenses at this very moment... you are wrong. And if not the lens as a whole, then working on some component, coating, manufacturing process, glass, motor, weather sealing doo-dad, paint application process, etc. Yup, Canon's resources are limited. Every company's resources are. So it behooves them to continuously improve and to keep the already paid for engineers hard at work.

Review: Canon EOS 5DS & EOS 5DS R

It seems that 5DSR has nearly one stop better DR than 5DIII at base ISO

http://home.comcast.net/~NikonD70/Charts/PDR.htm

DXO hasn't published 5DSr data yet. Where did they get this data?

That's great news if true. Landscapers would certainly smile about that.

- A

This is from Bill Claff. His measurements have been quite reliable over the years and mirror DXO results, although his actual values are lower than DXO. For example at ISO100 D810 scores 11.02, much lower than DXO's 14 or so.
Bill Class is very well respected in DPreview. His measurements are suppose to be more practical than dxo. Lot of people started questioning usefulness of dxo DR numbers when they somehow got more DR from d7200 than d750.

10 Years of the EOS 5D Line: The Movie

That's what I would tend to think about the 5D4 announcement as well. However we DID just have the 5DS arrive. So it's like they went through the 10 year anniversary with nothing to show for it. I think the 5DS gets some breathing room for sales before they show off the 5D4. Maybe we see a release next April with some announcement late this year. August I think we'll see an official announcement on the 1DX II. I don't see that camera missing the Olympics next summer.

cosmopotter said:
It wouldn't be much of an anniversary if they didn't launch the 5DMkIV! This video looks like a precursor to an announcement. It may not be August but I think we'll see the MkIV in 2015.

BTW My lens bet is a 70-300 IS USM replacement. I don't think it gets STM however.
