Upgrading - What To Expect

Mt Spokane Photography said:
Don't expect images to be noticeably better. You are buying additional mechanical features, such as top LCD, joystick, long life shutter, more fps, etc. In addition, there are the dual processors which allow the fast data flow and image processing. Dual Cards.

The new sensor will have a little better high ISO, maybe 1/4-1/2 stop.

If you obsess over defects at the pixel level, there should be less, but a large print is not going to be any different.

Have fun with it, its a nice camera, but realize that its about sports features more than any big jump in IQ. All DSLR's produce excellent images when a user exposes properly.

For sure.

What I am expecting is that the mechanics may help realise more keepers.

When I started bird photography, I was happy to snap them perched. I'm at the stage now where I want to take crisp, sharp BIF images. The AF system on my 500D is unfortunately just not capable enough to realise this.

DIGIC 6, improved noise performance and other technologies never had me expecting image quality vastly superior to what I'm currently getting.

But it should be better though

Any news about replacement (L) versions of the TS-E 90mm & TS-E 45mm

Much like Craig, I've received several mentions of updates to the two remaining old T/S lenses.

All of these were far enough away from the time of the rumour that they automatically get my personal 'heap of salt' rating (I've never had a 'CRx' style rating for a number of reasons).

The most interesting was that we would see quite a development in the T/S mechanism that would return settings data to the camera. Given the non trivial matter of reliably implementing this, I'd still put it into the 'wishful thinking' category.

As to the 90mm, I use it regularly. If you need it, get a used one? Looking at the used prices of the old TS-E24, these are lenses that will hold good residual value, even if new ones appear.

I changed the T/S axis of my own 90mm for macro work, and rarely wish it were any different - these are some notes I made when I first got it that might be of interest?

http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/ts-e90_tilt-shift.html

The limited tilt on the 90 makes it of less use for macro work than you might think, but here it is recently with a few extension tubes on my 100D

Note - photo taken (hand-held) with TS-E24 tilted to run the plane of focus down along the camera, from the angle-finder

Upgrade from 60D to 6D. Is it worth the money?

My best raptors in flight were shot with my 6D and 400mm f/5.6 using the center point. For static bird shots my 60D, 70-200 f/2.8 IS II and 2X TC III were fine, but once a bird took off the focus was way too slow. I would never give up having multiple bodies. When on a trip by car, I keep three bodies setup with different lenses so I can pull off the road and grab the required focal length. A shot may only be there for a very short time. In the long run your biggest investment will likely be in glass, while selling a 60D may only net you $400.

Sigma USB Dock Firmware 1.02 Released

So the dock firmware has been updated to include the 150-600 Sport, but not the Contemporary. More evidence that the Contemporary announcement was a bit premature, and that the lens was probably a reaction to Tamron's lens, rather than something that had been planned before Tamron announced theirs. It will be a while, perhaps quite a while, before we see any of the Contemporary models.

Samsung NX-1 samples - Comparisons Sony A77II/Nikon D750

digitalversus put up some sample comparisons of a pre-production NX-1, the Sony A77II, and the Nikon D750 as a guessing game. The answers are on the french language version of the site:

http://www.lesnumeriques.com/samsung-nx1-sony-a77ii-nikon-d750-votre-prefere-est-coreen-n36235.html

From the samples given, the BSI sensor looks pretty good. Better than the Sony crop, at least.

RAW files are here, although I couldn't open them in ACR, of course. Maybe someone with one of those weird RAW converters I'm not going to bother to download and install can open them?

Tamron 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III VC Review (EOS M and NEX)

Random Orbits said:
Thanks for the review, Dustin! It would be nice to see a comparison versus the EF-M 55-200 if you get the chance. Granted it's not sold natively in the US, but sourcing it from Canada is easy enough. It is interesting how quickly the Tamron gets to f/5.6 (near 50mm) and see how that stacks up against Canon's 55-200. Given how small the EF-M 18-55 is, carrying an extra lens for the M system is not as large a penalty compared to FF.

I tried to get Henry's in Canada to send me one. I have written an article for them before, but they have had a big turnover and the new contact that "my guy" got me never returned my email. I agree completely that this is the logical comparison, though. If status quo ever changes with Henry's I'll definitely do a comparison.

Gypsy Girl

Thanks for sharing. I think the light in the second image is far superior - just look at the life in the eyes. When we look at a standard portrait, typically the first place we look is into the eyes. The catchlights in the second image are nice, even though they are at the bottom of the eye, so a little unusual. What I think would have made the 2nd image a real stunner is a more shallow depth of field. I think the grass on the left is distracting and takes away from the detail of her face/hair/jewelry. The grasses are as big as she is - like a second person in the photo. In any event, cheers for sharing!

How to Get your 600ex-rt's firing wirelessly with Third Party Cameras.

dancook said:
I could not get the flashes to fire consistently from a Sony RX1R with the YN-E3-Rt

It's a Sony multi-interface hot shoe, but it will fire the 600ex-rt in the hot shoe.

The test button the YN-E3-RT fired them ok, and after doing that a few times sometimes it would work for a single flash triggered from the camera.

I will have to check the mode and try again, but I'm not optimistic.

You can try these things to help get consistent results.

1. fresh set of batterys.
2. make sure the yn3 is in M mode, not in GR.
3. Adjust the channels until it's reliable using the channel scanner on your 600rts.

I found ch.5 has worked best for where ever I've been shooting. I left my set there.

How Soon We Forget!

[* EOS 620 (1/4000s shutter, 1/250 x-sync) and Canon technical date back ... great camera. You could simply exchange the grip for a bigger one for bigger hands, nowadays you have to buy a semi-pro camera for that :-p ... http://mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/eos/eoscamera/620/

* EOS RT: nearly zero shutter lag and you can see the moment the picture is taken which all other dslrs don't manage because of the mirror blackout. Loved it ... http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/eos/eoscamera/EOS-RT/

WOW! EOS 620 was my first Canon camera and RT my second one (without selling the first one) :)

Polarizer

My tipp:
  • Buy a filter with an good coating. A nano coating e.g. is easier to clean, and more scratch-resistant. And has (advertised) an better optical quality
  • Slim version if used with wideangle
  • Look for an high transmission filter (like from Heliopan), as they are not so dark. Lesser light is "swallowed" by the filter at the same polarisation effect, so the lens is faster

e.g.: Heliopan High Transmission Polfilter circ. SH-PMC

Question for Owners of early run Tamron 150-600 lens

got to do some real shooting with it today and the af is definitely improved. tried it on some vultures in the bluffs. it was able to keep up with soaring birds and pick them out from the background. that's more than it could do before the update

A New EOS Pro Body With 46mp Next Month? [CR1]

Sorry to hurt the fanboys, but Canon is not releasing any DSLRs this year.

I'm inclined to agree that there is nothing new shipping this year, given that the 7DII isn't even coming until late November.

As a result, I gave up the vigil last night waiting for a myth and pulled the trigger to order a D810 + 5 lenses. I'll be putting my 5D3/7D +8 L lenses and a pile of other accessories as well as the Sony a7R+ and other associated accessory items up for sale in the coming weeks.

I'm tired of waiting for a never ending cycle of rumor and speculation and choosing to speak with my dollars. I'd rather be out taking the shots I want with a tool that meets my requirements today instead of settling for compromises or workarounds (for my shooting style and subject) with current gear.

I've been ready to upgrade my 5D3 since the spring and took the a7R route as a bridge but that just does not cut it. I typically look to refresh my primary camera body about ever 24 months but Canon no longer has anything that meets my shooting needs.

I'm sure most here don't care but Canon's lack of competitive products cost them a 15 year customer and CPS member this week.

Why should anybody care? Canon don't believe their products are uncompetitive so they are not going to build a camera just for you.

Get the tools/system that best does the job you have to do, for many that is Nikon, for others Sony, Pentax, Canon, Fuji or any one of a number of other manufacturers, it really doesn't matter to anyone, and nor should it..........
