Not sure about some of those comments. If this article's right, Sony's sensor division is doing very well!
Diversifying and making some niche products for bragging rights is not likely to cost them a lot compared to the marketing benefits.

The 28 f/2.8 IS is 352 + tax (in stock) at the Canon refurb store now, and the 24 f/2.8 IS is 384 + tax (currently out of stock).

Refurb, not retail. Although, not that I'm opposed to refurb, often some good equipment you can pick up for a discount there.

It doesn't matter as much as it used to with the refurbs now coming with a 1 year warranty. I picked up new 28 f/2.8 IS before last Christmas for 350 from a Canon authorized dealer, which was an even better price than what it is going for in the refurb store with 20% off now. The point is that at 300-500 (when you can find deals on them), the 24 f/2.8 IS, 28 f/2.8 IS and 35 f/2 IS offer a lot for the price.

Actually, they did introduce new high end cameras at NAB 2013. The G30, XA20 and XA25.

In NAB 2014 they have a workshop called "Canon Small Chip Sensor Workshop". The abstract for that session is "Discover how to create and deliver near instant video production in the field and in the studio with the XA20, XA25, and Vixia Mini X. Learn how to take advantage of their incredible image quality and superb Wi-Fi capabilities, and see what's new for 2014 within the Canon small chip sensor camera line". The bolded bit implies that they will be talking about 2014 cameras that have not been released yet. Granted, those will not be EOS cameras, but to say they will have nothing for NAB this year probably is not true.

I dropped my 400 5.6 twice - both times from a falling tripod (nearly 6' onto rocks one time, pavement the other) and both times the hood took the impact and was dented just enough to make closing it impossible. Both drops didn't cause any mechanical or obvious optical issues and I kept using the lens for many weeks until I got annoyed enough to send it into Canon. The repairs (hood replacement and lens alignment/calibration) cost me around $400 each time. It's a tough lens and took a beating with no issues.

I don't think RRS makes a leveling base for the Gitzo 5-series legs (the one I have works in RRS and Gitzo 3-series legs). So, for that solution you'd either need Gitzo's leveling base and a clamp attached to it with Loctite, or the RRS universal base. The RRS dovetails (TH-DVTL-40 or -55) would work under the heads.

As someone who shoots mostly birds, the 200-400 doesn't hold much appeal - I need as much focal length as I can get, so I'm usually at 840mm or 1200mm (600 II + 1.4x/2x).

I think we are seeing it here because CR is broadening out bit by bit into a photography site. There are posts and forums for various brands of cameras, printers, computers, software, tablets, and even smart phones.

If nothing else, its good to learn new things, who knows, perhaps some day one of us might find that we need such a product, and knowing about them will be a help.

I apologize, I misunderstood you. (nothing new for me)

I doubt that there will be enough posts to justify a separate forum, its pretty much a one shot deal. The same with security cameras, we may see a post every few months, but nothing worth a separate topic.

That may change, and if it does, I'm sure that there will be yet another forum.

On the other hand, we may start seeing forums dedicated to other brands.

Per my prior post on this topic, if the new 800 has an MFD <5m, built-in TC, superior IQ at 800 as compared to the 600II + 1.4XIII, IQ at 1120 = 600 + 1.4, and weighs less than 4 kg, I will purchase one even if it is priced a little north of the Nikon 800. These may be tough specs to meet, but the other series II superT's made improvements along these lines.

Just would like to add my 2 cents.
I am so happy i didnt read the reviews on the 16-33 ii before purchasing. It is a superb lens.
i have really fell in love with it at 35mm on my copy, i feel its sharp, accurate and renders colors well.
I am learning more how to use it on 16mm. When shooting people with 16 they really must be extremely close to center or their body shape will be altered, and its usually not to make them skinnier.

One thing i use this lens nearly all the time for video. The focus range is unbeatable. I can put the lens at about 1.5ft focal range and have nearly everything i need in focus.

Dont read the reviews solely, get it.

I would like to think so, but I'm not holding my breadth. It's time to replace it. According to AlanF and others in this forum, the Tamron can do as well as the 100-400L at 400mm. I woud expect the 100-400L replacement to do significantly better at 400mm, and depending on how much better it is, it could bring up the debate as to which is better: upres-ing the 100-400L II or using the Tamron at a longer focal length. And if Canon could do that, then the 100-400L II will be a winner: better AF, better IQ and significantly smaller and lighter. Even if the 100-400L replacement comes out this year, I'd probably wait until next Christmas when the prices soften a bit.

The 100-400mm range is fine as long as the IQ is high. According to TDP crops, the Nikon 80-400 softens significantly from 300 to 400mm. I'd much rather have a smaller zoom range and better IQ at the long end. That and f/4.5 at 80 or 100mm isn't all that exciting either.

I agree. I like my Sigma 120-400, especially for the price (I plan to sell it because I also bought the 70-300L...it has even more uses for me). I feel this Sigma is a better buy than the current 100-400 Canon. 120 is not quite as wide as 100, but it's far wider than 150mm. It's also half a pound lighter than the Tamron 150-600 (and about $200 less costly). So if you don't need 600mm, I feel it's a decent choice. If you need 600 and don't need wider than 150, the Tamron is likely better overall...a clear winner even. From the pictures I've seen online, the Tamron has better background bokeh than either the Canon 100-400 or this Sigma 120-400...but it's still not as good as the Canon 70-300L. I can't believe how smooth its bokeh is at all focal lengths. And its contrast is mind-blowing, for a zoom, in my opinion.

Hi guys,
I'd like to share links to four galleries of photos submitted for festival 'Hory a Mesto' (in translation Mountains and city) organized in Bratislava, Slovakia, devoted to all outdoor enthusiasts. Today I was browsing in these galleries and realized there are lots of great photos nobody (or almost nobody) voted for.

That's why I'm asking you guys, if you have time, feel free to view some nice images and also to vote. I think it would be nice and more objective for competition if you - photographers share your opinions and votes. Right now it seems only everyones FB friends voted.
