Comparison: Canon EF 24-105 f/4L IS vs Sigma 24-105 f/4 DG OS

gshocked said:
I just want to say that the Canon 24-105 f4L was my first L lens. I thought it was fantastic from day 1.
Can I ask why are some internet reviews giving it so many average reviews?
Is the Canon one really that average?

It's a very good lens, but for an L-series lens calling it 'average' is reasonable. It has pretty bad distortion at the wide end, and is decently but not exceptionally sharp wide open.

Just a random pic of my daughter in the house!

Broken file maybe? I'm on my phone but it doesn't show up on the page and it doesn't work after downloading it.

Jim

ETA - Irfanviewer on my laptop recognized it as a TIF; great shot!

Thank you very much! I changed it from a tif file to jpg but i'm not sure why it wouldn't show up. I checked it on my iPhone and it popped up with no problem...Thanks for the heads up I will look into it some more. ;D

Nikon 1 v3: servo af @20fps w/ 105 af points + 40 raw buffer ...

The sensor is still the one thing that bugs me the most. It's not even m43 sized. It's TINY. If Canon were able to do this with an APSC sensor it would be an incredibly impressive camera.
Even better if they were to put it into a weatherproof, drop-proof and water-resistant body. Now, that would be something I'd seriously look into.

Yup. I'm pretty much waiting for the AW2 unless they drop the price of the V3 by a few hundred dollars.
That 300mm zoom lens also needs to be fantastic for the system to be worth getting.

Visit Guilin, Mountain Range, in China - Lens selection

Grey sky and fake western/euro architecture. Welcome to China!

Joke aside the grey sky is a real pain in the pigu (yeah that's the chinese word for it). First because it's grey but even more because if fucks up exposure when it's sunny (behind the clouds with low EV on the ground and burnt sky. Grrrrrr. Where I live we are statistically considered to have 20 blue sky days a YEAR. >:( >:( >:(

But no I won't move out just because of that.

Do you top your pancake with a filter?

mackguyver said:
I'm still trying to find a reason not to sell mine - other than trying it out when it arrived, I have used it exactly zero times since I bought it in November. I agree that it makes no sense to put a filter on it as the only real draws of this lens is its small size and low price and spending any extra money on it negate both.
Still haven't used it so it's up on eBay...I'm sure it's a fine lens, but I never found a use for it.

Lens Announcement Coming in February? [CR1]

nlrela said:
So I suppose the rumor of a new 100-400 has died by now ?
Looks like it ... but I just bought my 100-400 L IS about 1 weeks ago ... this is my second 100-400 L IS lens ... the first one was sold in 2012 to fund the 5D MK III+24-70 ... despite its "old age", Canon's 100-400 L IS still packs a punch and not far behind the latest 80-400 VR lens from Nikon (in fact the build quality of Canon's 100-400 L IS is better than the latest from Nikon

Develop Announcement for an EF 800 f/5.6L IS II Coming This Fall? [CR1]

The 300-600 MkII supertele lenses were something like 18 months from development announcement to launch. Hopefully Canon can do better...

Canon did have earthquakes, tsunamis and melting nuclear power plants to contend with during the creation of the Mark II series as well. Gotta take that into account. ;)

True.

Great photo's.

Thanks, enclosed a screen print from LR showing exactly where I took each photograph and also how small the town really is!

$1200 1DX discounts on eBay... Anyone bought one?

When I lived in Thailand (2004-2006) high end electronics were way more expensive there than in the USA. Has it really changed that much?

No, everyday consumer electronics are more expensive. I wait until I am in America to buy pretty much anything else. But, Canon is not moving the cameras here at all. It is stale and they are cutting prices here to help sales. So only the 5DIII and 1Dx are being heavily discounted. Although I don't want either camera they are for the taking if I wanted one for that price.

www.fotofile.net This is where I buy my gear here. The Canon prices are shown on there web site.

All of their cameras are being heavily discounted. Most likely because many of the lines are going to be replaced in the near future and they are clearing inventory.

First real attempt at taking some bird pictures

revup67 said:
PS not intending to steal this thread, but here's a female Northern (red-shafted) Flicker. Note the pale colors which are accurate as the male version is far more colorful and with more contrast. One option that may also help is if your camera has a setting which is set to sRGB you may be able to change that to Adobe RGB. if you use LightRoom or Photoshop, sustain this color template during post process which offers greater color depth than sRGB and it may offer further accuracy. You can almost always set your monitor and printer up for the Adobe 1998 RGB color profile so that all match from camera to print.

Keep up the great work on your bird pics..very nice first attempt entry and parts of Texas are a real birding paradise.

Thank you for the encouragement and tips on color. My system is set up for sRGB, but it's easy for me to switch to adobe RGB and compare.

Regards,

Wes

ps - great picture of the Northern Flicker!

Accurate Color Capture

Each pixel has an R, G or B color filter over it (and there are twice as many G). The spatial resolution is based on the actual pixels, but the color value ultimately assigned to each pixel (done when the RAW capture is converted, either in-camera or on the computer) is interpolated based on neighboring pixels. The demosaicing algorithm basically guesses the actual color of the light hitting a pixel based on the pixels in the local area.

Your eyes are analogous, with red, green and blue cones, and your brain interpolates the actual color.

Some advice about my new (2nd) 5D3 please.

hello all,

I just found out the shutter count of my new 5D3. After taking enough pictures and playing with it the shutter count was 132.

So it was new after all.

I found out by installing Magic Lantern which became available for 5D3 firmware 1.2.3 with bootflag removal capability :) :) :)

Canon 24-70 f/2.8II lens hood

Sabaki said:
Double check and listen if the hood clicks when you fit it to the lens.
May be a situation with the spring isn't in place and it's simply not locking onto your lens.
If that isn't the case, check out your handling techniques, as you may be inadvertently taking the hood off, so to speak.
Thanks, but definitely no problem here on that score...it's clicking in just fine. I just get so absorbed in my work I take minimal notice of my gear, even in busy, tight packed events where the cameras, lenses & flashes get knocked around almost constantly. Other than my run-away EW-88C hood, in general the gear handles the extremes of job pressure perfectly well, the most vulnerable items being the cables running from flash to external batteries getting snagged and modifiers like Stofens or Gary Fong getting dislodged and lost. I can't recall the large hood on my old optically inferior 24-70 f/2.8 MkI ever falling off.

Not to worry, I'll find a fix.

neuroanatomist said:
Yes, the release button has a light touch, as does the 70-200 II's.
My 70-200 f/2.8II hood release button needs a much heavier touch than the 24-70 f/2.8II under discussion.
I suspect mine is merely a production line anomaly.

6D or 5Dm3?

T1i was the first camera that I owned with AF and I was amazed. Then when I had a 5DII I wondered about all these people going on about AF. I mean even with the T1i I could do better taking shots of my kids playing sports than I could with my A1.

Then I got a 7D used for $800. Oh boy, another eye-opener. Not just AF, but responsiveness and speed. Then I started rationalizing that I could get rid of noise and for anything but landscapes and portraits the 7D would come out instead of the 5DII.

So I had to get a 5DIII. I had told myself for over a year that I didn't really need it, the 5DII and then the 5DII + 7D combo was fine. I lied. Trying to shoot my kids running around indoors with the 5DII during the Christmas break and knowing that my 7D would get all the shots I was missing with the 5DII (but with ISO6400 noise) I finally pulled the trigger. The 7D also got me fed up with focus-recompose that I was doing with the 5DII.

New EdMika Polymer FD to EF conversion kit

Mini-Review for the new EdMika Polymer FD to EF conversion kits.

Canon's Manual Focus FD lenses are legendary for sharpness, color, and contrast. Many people have discovered how well they work on various Mirror-less and 4/3 camera systems using simple ad-on adapters that go between the lens and the camera.

Unfortunately there is no way to use a simple adapter with EOS camera without adding corrective optics which destroy the image quality. EDMika recognized this a long time ago and has been developing individual conversion kits for EOS cameras.

I was scanning through the various ebay listings and came across EdMika's new Polymer mount conversion/converter/adapter kits.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2050601.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xedmika&_nkw=edmika&_sacat=0&_from=R40

He has recently added many more conversion kits for the FDn (New FD mount) series lenses and they are no longer made of Brass. The text of his ebay listing describes his reasoning for the change in material, and I think it is a good move. The Brass kits were extremely well made but they were heavy. I bet that in some cases the new brass mounts were heavier than the lens they were going on. The brass color also didn't really match the chrome plating of the camera mount and could also cause light reflections near the sensor.

These new Polymer mounts are also extremely well made, weigh almost nothing, and are completely black in color. I really appreciate the weight savings when I use the lens with my SL1. I am sure users with larger cameras will feel the same way.

I ordered the kit for the FDn 50mm 1.4 and it arrived in just 3 days. The package includes a new mount, "Ed Bushing" (to engage the aperture), and a EdMika EOS lens cap.

The kit does not come with any instructions so you have to watch all the videos on the ebay listing page to get a good idea of how the various FDn lenses are taken apart and them assembled with the new mount. The kit is very easy to install and fits really well.

Here is the video that applies to to FDn 50mm 1.4 because it uses the "Ed Bushing" that replaces part of the original aperture linkage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ats-wQOkreY

In my photos I show the partially assembled lens with the old silver colored ring beside the lens and the new "Ed Bushing" installed in position. The "Ed Bushing" is also black in color and made of the same Polymer material.

The new Polymer rear lens cap is interesting, and lower in profile, but I think I prefer the standard Canon cap.
