I've been keeping up to date on this family of lenses when Zeiss initially started talking about them. I just drool whenever I first saw it and even blogged about it. I'm quite certain the wide-angle lens is going to be a 35mm. They already have the crazy 15mm. The best in it's class. So it makes sense if they do the 35mm.

I'm glad they are getting closer to a release date for the 85mm. I'm sure it's going to be nothing short of amazing

Have to agree! When it comes to ergonomics, the Nikon approach just does not make sense. I used to think of Sigma as the red-headed stepchild of Japanese camera makers, but Nikon really holds that position. Sigma are innovating and yet are doing more with less, where Nikon are just treading water, and piggybacking on the innovation of others in order to design and produce new product.

The forth body arrived today and has been returned. It had several red and blue pixels and a small cluster of stuck pixels. Again these were not obvious untill I went looking for them in long exposures. So after all the swapping it seems the origional body had the least issues.
Thanks for all your advice. I will have to deal with the issue by either shooting in raw or by using the long exposure noise reduction. My only other option would be a lighting rig and a scaffold tower.

Is that it? I am aware, from reading previous discussions here, that the crop factor is not a huge advantage (if at all), and compatibility with EF-S lenses is probably not relevant. The built-in flash may not even come with the new 7D anymore, and some people even dislike it. Burst rate, well, here I see a difference, but it is not important to me (I understand other folks may need it, though).
Anyway, when the 7D2 finally arrives costing US$ 2,000-2,200 body only (more? less?), how much will a 5D3 be costing? I have just found prices under 2,900 on canonpricewatch.com, and rythercamera.com has the 5D3 for 2,499 right now. Even Canon sells it refurbished for under 2,800.
What do you guys think? Will the 7D2 be worth buying when the price of the 5D3 drops even further? I am not so sure anymore.

I can see some advantages in a future 7D mark ii, over 5D mark iii, but image quality at high ISO should not be one of them. I am an advocate for APS-C, which has real advantages for me. But if you expect a big improvement in high ISO, I recommend going with current full frame cameras. I like the depth of field of APS-C, and the size, weight, and more compact lens, and lower cost. But do not believe in big improvements in high ISO without a revolution happening in image sensor technology.

Is the 17-40L likely to be updated any time soon? year of the lens and all that

Oh not at all, the rebels are fine cameras, no ones sneezing at them or anywhere near them it's just the way that they are "upgraded" is very humdrum and not worth getting excited about! We'd rather hear about a 7D replacement than a new rebel. Just more curious about the higher end specs.

I started out with a t2i myself. Gave it to my GF to use when upgraded. Still work flawlessly after years of service. I have nothing but respect for my humble rebel. I learned a lot from it. I actually get annoyed when people under use it or never use anything other than the kit lens. It's so cheap that almost every ones got one. Trouble is they don't all get the most of this amazing machine! Shame really as it can take stunning pics. That's how I feel about the EOS M too. I reckon in the right hands it can do wonders.

Those are really good cameras when in the right hands, indeed. I just feel they are a little too small for my hands. To be honest, I fail to see much advantage in the reduced size of the SL1, since it will not fit in a pocket anyway.

Ultimately it was the small size of the rebel that made me want to go for a bigger model. Taking 1000 shots in one day gave me cramp! The first time I held a 7D was like finding a perfect fitting glove! The 5D2 feels good too but man the 7D just begs to be held! And then there's the shutter sound. Rebel is like a cat sneezing. The 7D is a deep satisfying cough!

I'm weird about stuff like that! But hey if you're not comfortable with your gear you won't wanna use it right?

I agree - when I was looking for my first dSLR, my hands just didn't fit the rebels, otherwise I would've bought a rebel. The 40D felt so much better ergonomically, and the 7D somehow improved what I thought was practically perfect. The 7D shutter also sounds much better than the 40D or the 5D2 - both the older cameras sound very clunky. Now I hate using the 40D in church or events because of the extra noise!

I'll try and help with your question about your wireless triggers, although it might help others if you could break down your question (sorry, this could just be me).

In regards to your yn-622c wireless triggers they should work straight out of the box. In regards to powering the wireless triggers on, I would recommend that you power them on in this sequence:

If you are using off camera flash (therefore you have 1 trigger on the camera and 1 on the flash), turn the camera on first then the trigger. For the flash - attach the trigger on the flash then turn the flash on first then the trigger.
Then you should press the test button first (few times doesn't hurt), before you use them.


I'm not sure what you mean about turning the camera to wireless, do you mean wifi mode?

Also how many flashes are you trying to get firing at the same time and are you trying to do any ratio modes?

Different sellers may have different promotion ID's, you should download the form from the company you purchased the product from, or it may end up being rejected.

Patents are the result of R&D that a company paid huge amounts of $$ for. They may file for a patent, but not put it into production for some very good reasons. Usually, its a matter of production cost. A patent might produce a wonderful lens, but if it costs $150,000 a copy to produce it, then it awaits some new manufacturing technology.
I'd say that a patent is a way of protecting those millions of dollars spent in R&D. Most Japanese companies share patents or sell rights to use them, so I see no issue there. If you want to use something that another company paid to develop, you owe them some money.

Canon are like Apple on refurb. Full-warranty, as new condition and performance. Bland box.

I haven't bought a new computer for years, just refurb. Just got a refurb 6D from Adorama, getting it on Friday. I have zero concerns.

Chances are it has been more thoroughly run through quality control than a new one off the line.

This is a useless post except to say I'm excited about finally heading across to the US from Canada and picking up the Canon 6D and lenses I ordered some weeks ago from BH and Adorama. Looking forward to getting back into full-frame and trying out the Voigtlander 20 especially, as well as the 50 2.5 macro. Some obscure lenses that I have a feeling will really perform well. The 40stm and 70-200/4is everyone already knows are great. I'll start shooting and posting soon!

The simple answer would be yes....for now.

While I do miss the 5D3, the 6D has not stopped me from accomplishing the things I need to accomplish. There are definitely times when I do miss the AF system of the former, but not to the point where I'm going to lose any sleep over it. For the time being, I can get the job done with the 6D AF system which will suffice until Canon puts out another FF option that lures me into an upgrade.

I haven't really had any instances where I missed the other key downgraded features although I'm sure I will at some point. Although I will say there was one instance where I could have probably used the 1/8000th.

I still haven't really utilized the wifi features very much as I don't really like the UI vs the Camranger.

My initial impressions regarding image quality and workability of the RAW files in post still remain.

Other notes:
After replacing the focusing screen, I have been using my manual lenses a lot more.
As minute as it is, I have noticed the drop in size/weight which inclined me to purchase a 40mm pancake. The combo is actually pretty compact considering what I used to carry around.

Also, my original intention was to start swapping stuff out and selling so that I could create a new 1Dwhatever fund. That has since been derailed as I just picked up a Fuji X-E2 with 35/1.4. Assuming this works out well, I suppose it will only further convince me that I made the right choice as I picked up the combo for basically the difference in price from the 5D3 to 6D plus a couple hundred bucks.

All in all, I still believe it was the right choice as I will now have a new toy that I will hopefully love without having spent anything,

Has anyone tested this lens on full frame? (specifically 5d3)

I really want a super wide (something 16mm or wider) but I don't really want to spend to much as generally I only use superwide to exagerate perspective / fun creative shots rather than serious landscape or architecture.

I've seen a preowed copy of the 15-30 for £140 and wonder is it cheap because its rubbish?

Any opinions or sample shots would be really appreciated.

I've never shipped a camera to Canon, but I've loaned a 7D to a friend. Wrap it in bubble wrap, then place that in a box large enough for a few inches of packing material on all sides. If sending to Canon, do not include anything but the camera (no battery, no strap, etc.), ship it with the body cap installed.

Ship UPS or FedEx so you can get a tracking number that means something (USPS reports delivery, but does not actually track regular shipments). Enter the proper declared value and pay the insurance.

Probably a little late here, but it is worth mentioning that all of the freight companies have packaging guidelines.

If these packaging guidelines are not followed, the freight companies will not pay out on the insurance that you paid for in the event of damage. Actual loss is different if the package is not recovered. I have received "improperly packaged" damaged freight that was insured (and coverage refused) and have had packages outright disappear from UPS (only once, but I would have been SOL if I didn't insist on insurance from the shipper, and the investigation took a month).

If you do not have a shipping account, insurance gets expensive pretty quickly. In my experience, the local shipping depots in the strip malls mark up insurance rates 2x over doing it yourself online (which are still overly expensive retail rates), as long as the coverage limit isn't reached. UPS, USPS and FedEx all have insurance limits for online transactions and UPS has additional forms that must be filled out by a UPS employee once a certain threshold is reached (route driver or UPS depot- the strip mall centers don't count).

The replacement value of a 5DIII and a 70-200 II lens can come close to the insurance limits for retail customers.

Big companies shipping expensive stuff may not insure the packages- they have separate insurance to cover loss and the cost of shipping is exceeded by the cost of the carrier insurance rates.

For those that ship camera stuff regularly, it may be worthwhile checking into a shipping rider for your insurance.

as pointed out, all lenses do that, one usually just does not see it. As the manual states, these are interchangeable lenses, the center of the lens may not exactly coincide with the center of the sensor.
In fact, if you mount a lens, before it locks into place, you will notice that you can shift it around in the mount quite a bit.
If you do vignetting tests with other lenses, you will see asymmetric hard vignetting also with other lenses. http://photonius.wikispaces.com/Vignetting
