EOS Bodies - Developing ranges....

I reckon there is still room for a xxD line. But the numbers is running short. So let us move it up to the xD line. I mean come on, nothing except for the sensor on EOS 6D is really xD standard.

7D Mark II - Top APS-C

7D body
100% VF
10 FPS
Deep buffer
1 x CF + 1 x SD
3"2 fixed LCD 1040k
61 point AF
f/8

8D - Semi Pro APS-C

60D body
97% VF
6 FPS
1 x SD
3" swivel screen
19 point AF

Nice upgrades, hope they happen.

Cost breakdown of a lens EF & EF-S

No idea of the specific numbers, but much of the expense is the glass. In your example, the 17-55 has three aspherical elements, one of which is moulded glass and the other two are replica elements. The 24-70 II doesn't have a block diagram available AFAIK, but the MkI version of the lens had a ground/polished aspherical element at the front (i.e. the biggest, most expensive element). Also, many of the elements in the 24-70 II are larger than the 17-55, because of the larger image circle.

But as mentioned, mostly the price is a function of marketing estimates of what the target market is willing to pay...

5d2 or 6d

Well, looks like I tied the score :P. Until we see some pics from an unbiased photographer shooting with a 6D, I don't think many would hazard a guess. I certainly would not... The safe answer is 5D2. My answer is save the cash for 5D3. But what do you shoot? What lenses do you have? Is your camera dying?

I guess, all I have to complain about is that I live in Europe :D.
$2750 for 5D3 is nice, but $1750 for 6D would be nicer ;). I'm not a professional, but I'm more into photography than talking about expensive features I don't need. I think that 5D3 may be an overkill for me and I can't afford it atm. I hate to say this, but D600 is very tempting. I may just sell all may Canon toys, get the D600 with a nice 50/1.4 and wait till 5D3 price comes down (2015?). First I want to see some reviews...

My thoughts exactly with the exception of I dont like the Nikon feel or UI.

I don't like many things about Nikon - UI, ergonomics (backward lens mounting, backward zooming, backward focusing, grip, button layout), lack of aperture control in LiveView, possible green LCD tint :), customer service, no free image editing software, more expensive higher grade lenses, arrogant fanboys. That may take some getting used to :D

Importing Cameras from US

For proper tax procedures you will need to bring a tax back voucher (in Switzerland you won't get much, though), then you have to get that stamped by border police. At the other side of the border checkpoint you will need to pay taxes for importing. Don't try to sneak past that point, because there is often video surveillance. In addition there are frequent controls at all parking spaces and fuel stations in the vicinity of the border (Zollgrenzbezirk). It only makes sense to buy across border in case the combination of price difference and customs procedures make it profitable. As I have stated before, buying professional gear in Germany is currently better for me, while buying cheaper lenses/gear (e.g. CF cards) is not.

6D Sensor... why?

Canon-F1 said:
can someone explain why the 6D has a new developed 20.2 MP sensor?

The reason imho is very, very simple: To put the specs below the 5d3 (22mp) and 5d2 (21mp). The design of the 6d is purely marketing driven (af, x-sync) - if they couldn't get away with simply recycling the 5d2 sensor and didn't want to cannibalize the 5d3 a "new development" was the only option.

I still expect to 6d to have very low banding/ read noise, but this is not only due to sensor design w/ Canon tech but has to do with the rest of the camera electronics. As for dr/iso, I'm curios to see the reviews, but I don't think it'll save the 6d from forgetfulness.

My next Canon in my dreams

1. First the sensor: FF 46MP with APS-C crop mode. In FF mode 5 fps, in crop mode - 9 fps.
2: AF - like 5d3 should be enough
3: usable ISO - 50-3200. 3200 has to be usable in crop mode yet, better than 1600 in 5d2
4: WiFi or LAN onboard
5. DLO onboard
6. usable 16bits DR :-)
7. 1920p @ 60fps, 720p @120fps :-)
8. Adobe Premiere for Canon and Adobe Lightroom for Canon on included disc, huge discount on Photoshop
9. Loyalty program - you buy each new gear on the camera's level but have one 30-50% discount on any non telephoto lens they have
10. Included in Loyalty program - a personal photo career advisor :-)

Yes, that all could cost 3500$-4500$.

Amazon.co.uk 5D Mk iii deal

tis a good price indeed! thanks for sharing!

www.idealo.de also shows some nice prices aswell for Euro based customers.
when searching though use the prefix Mark III instead of MkIII its just the way they roll.

ireland seems to have an extra few hundread slapped onto the price of both bodies and lenses.
i.e. MkIII is 3299 euro compared to 2900 with Germany and the rest of Europe
lens wise 24-70 MkII is 2599 in ireland and 2199 in Germany and EU

I wonder if the amazon.co.uk price drop is permanent? 3 suppliers there at that price!

Canon U.S.A Inc. Announces moving of Corporate Headquarters

Love it...great creativity! Let me add a little please....

The mayor of nearby city Lake Seny had this to say about Canon's decision to move to lake failure,"we thought we had a shot at being the new home for canon usa because so many of their executives are golfers, and Lake Seny is known world wide for the quality of our city's driving range".

Industry analyst D.R. Exmer had this to say, "engineers at Canon have been working to increase the quality of their own city driving range by adding things like gapfree micro golf balls, but it seems like golfers continue to prefer the quality of Lake Seny's driving range". Exmer also added, "even folks from nearby lake Nokin drive to lake Seny for the city's driving range"

Ken Blockwell, who was recently seen on Canon's driving range had this to say, "it doesn't matter what city driving range you use, just hit golf shots". "I use cheap plastic golf clubs from the 1980's all the time, and I'll use whatever driving range that's closest, people just need to hit golf shots and forget about the quality of the driving range".

Analyst DR Exmer, upon hearing Blockwell's advice had this to say, "that's the kind of advice I would pay for".

EOS 6D sample images and video here

steliosk said:
all these samples are JPEG

JPEG is filtered with masking and noise reduction. You just can't compare which camera delivers the best out of the detail..

seen the samples of 1D X? these sucks as well!

wait for some proper RAW files and then compare detail and ISOs.

Some pictures say "This JPEG image is processed by in-camera RAW processing from a RAW image with a EOS 6D." .... The portrait doesn't say so.

I honestly wonder how you could advertise your new camera with crappy images. As I said in another topics, Canon thinks their users who can't afford the 5D3 will buy the 6D, just because it's the only one they can afford. They don't feel like they have to convince them, it's more that their blind-with-brand-loyalty user base will have no choice.

Infrared reflectivity

Not really a photography question but I know there's a few optical wizards about so thought I'd post away :). I'm working on a system that uses a 850 +/- 10 nm infrared photodiode and what I'd like is an easy way to bench test the device. It'll be illuminated and if it worked in the visible range I'd use black, 50% grey and white cards to test it with, it doesn't have to be very precise just a way to take a few readings across the range of realistic readings, as opposed to putting in an enclosure or pointing at a mirror.

Because the filters on infrared remote controls are visibily dark and farily transparent to IR but designed to block visible light I know the rules of play are quite a bit different at that wavelength. I wondered if anyone had ideas on materials to use or maybe some reference to a database of how reflective various materials are at various wavelengths?

1DX Color Noise

One should not expect 'mind-blowing' image quality from 1DX. It's an amazing body with an ordinary sensor.
Not that I resent mine but IQ is just not one of its strengths... For everything else, it's fantastic!
I agree. I'm happy but not blown away. Specially when u can get 4 extra MP on a 5D III for $3K less and the same sensor.

I totally disagree. I like the 1d X files much better than the 5d3. It has better DR, better sharpness, better low iso etc.

With very underexposed images like the one in the OP, it will show more noise. Try shooting it over and pull it down instead.

I haven't tried the much acclaimed 1ds3, but the 1d X kicks all other Canon bodies butt....

I also disagree. The RAW files from the 1D X are substantially better than the ones from the 5D MK3

6D Review

Why does it bother people KR gets more traffic? Do i care if this guy profits from it? No. Some of his info has been helpful over the years. As in any news or info you take what makes sense and leave what doesn't, no diff with KR. Its his blog he is allowed to do whatever he wants and if people want to advertise with him or pay him somehow that is up to those who believe it was worth it. His hyper sharp, hyper saturated work is crap when it comes to family photos but he isn't a total looser with landscapes. He does know a lot about cameras and he has opinions and he is sometimes wrong in my opinion but what do i care? He does a lot of sample image work not to wow you just give samples to demonstrate performance of diff cameras and lenses. I don't advocate him just realize he does offer something of value regardless of opinion.

Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II Arrived

chabotc said:
Ok so it's only been 3 hours since my copy arrived but the initial impressions are very good:

1) Focus is out of this world fast and accurate, more so then the 70-200 II which was my previous benchmark of best focusing system

2) Sharpness is incredible - so much so that I think it'll make me watch the shutter speed and/or use tripods even more then before - it's so sharp that you'll be able to tell when you moved a tiny bit, and when it lands perfectly, well it does blow away the sharpness of my 24 1.4, 35 1.4, 50 1.2 and 70-200 II by a decent margin - boy do pixels look amazing with this lens!

3) Feels great on a 1DX, balance works out great, even though it's not a super light lens its a pleasure to hold and use on that body

4) Color, saturation is damn good as well - relieved about this since sometimes sharpness / saturation are a trade-off in optical design, and this lens is nailing both of those

In short - it's looking like this will be my new most used lens!

Thanks for sharing that. I had one pre-ordered and can't wait for it to arrive.
