Canon EOS R1 Firmware v1.1.0 Now Available (Update: Firmware has been pulled)

In the article, it says "We don’t know for sure, but a lot of us would love to see new pre-capture binding options."

What are binding options? I know some camera mark the key frame. Would all the photos from a burst be bundled into a single file?

Also, I know the firmware is pulled but does it allow pre-capture to be assigned to a button now? Thanks.

As much as we complain about camera firmware updates having issues (from all manufacturers, might I add: Sony bricked cameras, Nikon bricked lenses, Fujifilm…just makes everything worse) at least they didn’t pull a Fujifilm. That company legitimately destroyed their autofocus in a firmware update and took over 9 months to fix it. The worst part was you could download the “broken” firmware update all the way up until the day you could download the “fix”. They never pulled it from the download!! Those cameras are still “broken” to this day because autofocus performs worse than it did at launch because of firmware - truly terrible.

I was hoping to see some additional sports added to the Action Priority menu. I mean it's great for Soccer, Basketball, and Volleyball, but what about American Football, Baseball, and Ice Hockey?
Those are niche sports whiche are pretty unpopular on a global scale. While about 500 million people worldwide follow or play baseball it's 2.5 billion (yes, you read that correctly) for cricket. Tennis is also way more popular, for example.

American Football, Baseball Ice Hockey are very big and not just in the US. They are in many other countries. Baseball is huge in Japan, Korea, and Latam America. Certainly not as big a Soccer, but we already have Soccer support in the camera, The request is for additional sports in the R1 to make it more complete.

I would not object to Cricket, or Tennis being added. While those sports are popular, in terms of revenue which I think would be a big part of selling cameras, American Football is significantly larger, as is baseball. Baseball is actually the number one sport in Japan, which seems like it might influence a Japanese company. Neither is what I would call "nitch".

If you would like to see Cricket and Tennis added, why not say that?

Tennis is the easiest sport to lock focus on the player, there is no need for action priority. Same thing as Golf, and Cricket is much the same - so few players on such a big field.

How often are you shooting Tennis when there is a player in the background/foreground of the frame? It would only be doubles when from certain angles.

I have never shot American football, but I shoot Australian football and Rugby, and I have been told it could be the shape of the ball that would make that tricky. At times the camera might thing a player's head is the ball for example. Soccer, Basketball and Volleyball are all pretty simple when you think about it from the camera's perspective of identifying a ball.

And the same case applies to Hockey pucks, Cricket and Tennis balls. It could be hard for the camera to distinguish the ball from the background.

tennis photography no doubt depends quite a bit on where the photographer is allowed to be. however doubles is a very fast moving game. getting focus on the player about to make a play is a tough proposition. even following the play through the view finder is hard. I dont know if following a ball would work. Probably the best strategy for doubles involves multiple cameras following each of the players and utilizing precapture. At high school matches, I focus on the player across the net the view of whom is not obstructed by players on my side of net. Easy to get great shots of the cross court rally. harder to get net player action.
