Canon EOS R5 Mark II: Firwmare v1.1.1 Release

“Ordinary Filmmaker” on Youtube, who appears to have been one of the earliest to report the focus issue on v1.03 has tested v1.1.1 and is happy. I’ve had other confirmations as well. I’m going out tomorrow to try for myself.
I just installed it. Haven't had a chance to use it but it turns back on and I can dial in the number of pre-shoot photos now.

Thanks for the information, I hope all goes well with your testing today! If not, please update us.

There are so many problems with the latest firmware for the R5 MK II... ;-(

For this reason, as well as its only 45 MP sensor and the abandonment of the analog viewfinder, I'm so glad I didn't buy it!!
My 5Diii was better than my 7D. My 5Div was better than my 5Diii and my (preordered) R5 was substantially better than my 5Div.
The only downside for mirrorless was battery life but so much better in every other way over the last 5 years.
The R5ii would be an incremental upgrade for the genres that I shoot but for other people it was a no-brainer eg pre-shutter, ES with flash, priority people AF detect, ES 14 bit etc.

It is a bit like electric cars. Once you switch, you won't go back (unless you regularly tow heavy loads or only drive on highways).
You can pry my Tesla from my cold dead fingers even if Elon is a **** (pick your own 4 letter expletive)

YMMV

Update: I went out today to photograph birds in flight and I think there is magic somewhere in the AF system. I used Whole area servo AF with animal subject tracking and Auto eye tracking. It repeatedly found and locked onto the subject with the first frame and stuck like glue, even with a wood pigeon flying fast directly towards me. It only lost a bit of sharpness when the bird was a couple of meters from me. I was using a 100-500 lens at 500mm.

Great to hear, I'm happy for you!

How do you like that lens? I seem to see sales on it very frequently. I have a Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary and I'm wondering if it'd be a good upgrade getting the Canon. I assume the Canon would be faster because I have to use an adapter but as mentioned in my previous posts, I have not gotten a lot of use out of my new R5ii and I got it as soon as it came out. SAD! Hopefully soon. I've gotten so many lights and other things for it and just haven't gone out shooting.

I can’t comment about the Sigma as I have no experience of it. I’ve had the 100-500 for four years and I’m very happy with it. It’s fast-focusing and sharp, quite capable of keeping up with the incredible AF in the R5II. At f/7.1 wide open at 500mm in poor light your auto ISO will go through the roof, but Lightroom Denoise is very effective at recovering great images. It’s a fantastic wildlife lens.

Very nice! Thank you for the input. I could probably find a comparison video somewhere online and see what they think. I have heard a lot of good things about the Canon. Though I think it's the lens that there was a story about them cracking in half, though that seems like it was a rare issue.

Thanks again!

I had a 150-600 C. Although a very sharp copy, I sold it when I bought my 100-500mm 5 years ago as the AF of the RF lens was so much faster.

No, that was the 200-800. The 100-500 is a great lens. The only annoying thing is the use of a teleconverter when the 500mm is no longer sufficient.
Ah, yes, I got them confused. Thanks for the clarification!

I'm going to have to give the 150-600 C a shot on the R5Mii. I haven't combined them yet but I think it'll be interesting to try. If I don't like it, I'll definitely look into the 100-500.

I don't do a a lot of distance shooting, so I'm really not in a rush. Generally I kind of shoot the opposite (macro). I think there's a bit of similarity though, as far as patience needed and keeping the camera from shaking. Of course with handheld shots. I do have a new high-end tripod I'd love to use, photographing birds or any other interesting animal in the distance. ☺️

I never use a tripod for photographing birds when I have a relatively lightweight lens like the RF 100-500 or RF 200-800mm with really good stabilization. It's a fag to carry, useless for birds in flight, not suitable for me for opportunistic shots when walking, and in a hide I can rest my arms or camera on a ledge. I might on a very rare occasion take an ultra lightweight flimsy monopod.

After the problems with firmware 1.0.3, I tried to load the new firmware 1.1.1 onto the camera today. This is impossible (download from Canon Germany/Switzerland). In the “Update Firmware / 1.0.3 -> 1.1.1” window, only ‘Cancel’ is active; “OK” is grayed out and inactive.
I tried this with Canon Utility and directly via card (cards formatted in camera and on PC). I always get the same result. Now I have to go back to Canon Support. This firmware drives me really crazy.

Hi Nemorino
Thanks - I changed now the SD with a CF. I got the same result. Update is still not possible. It seams that this time at Canon I will need a whiskey instead of coffee, when waiting for them to do the update!
Just to be sure: the touch screen does not work when updating firmware. You need to use the buttons - wheels to select ‘Update’.

I'm going to update my R5m2 to 1.1.1 soon. Will need to backup and
reload my settings ... but can't remember where to find the instructions
on how to do that.

Also assuming that either the CF card or SD card can be used for either task?

... thanks in advance ... Jim in the PNW
