Canon to announce ‘major’ new firmware for the EOS R1 & EOS R5 Mark II ahead of CP+

I personally believe that after speaking with multiple reps at Canon, there is still a chance we see some more video-focused features added into the R1 and R5 Mark II with firmware updates. At IBC, Canon has been telling people that they are looking into adding open gate recording to more camera bodies and did not specify if that would be the C80 or cameras outside of Cinema like the R1 and R5 Mark II. If anything, I hope we can see open gate added to the R1. Downsampled 4K60 would be incredible for the R5 Mark II, but I have a feeling it will come with thermal limitations that would reduce its usability. Even with the fan grip, the R5II is struggling for some users. I personally haven't had any issues with the R1 or R5II in any recording scenario I've thrown at them, but every person uses their cameras differently and in different conditions. For Canon to introduce a feature and approach it as a manufacturer there is a lot of things to consider and test. So I'm not holding my breathe for 4k60 oversampled....I will, however, be adding a C50 to my stable after convincing myself the R1 was all the video camera I ever needed. Canon went ahead and made the C50 way too good to ignore.
The R5 II overheats in the RAW and SRAW modes even with the cooling grip,
It really does not overheat in the other modes.
Most people who complain to me use it without the grip.

Canon should at least give us this option even if it comes with thermal limitations. Let it be a problem of each and every user instead of cutting this feature entirely.
Even 1-2 minutes of oversampled 4K60p would be better than NOTHING at all!

Nikon offered 8.3K60p internally and 8.3K oversampled 4K60p YEARS AGO so Canon should be able to figure this out.

I could be mistaken, but like the R5II, the Z8 can only record 8K60 in N-RAW and not a compressed codec. I am with you in hopeful we can get oversampled 4K60 on the R5II, but I don’t think Canon will do it if it has any serious limitations. I overheated my Delkin Black 4.0 cards in my R1 shooting oversampled 4K60. But the camera was fine. I honestly believe the thermal capacity of the CFExpress and the components around that area are crucial in determining what these cameras can and can’t do.

There is a thermal limitation, but also 'perfect' product segmentation. Meaning an R5II can't quite do what an R6III, R3 or R1 can. Stresses the card far less than 8k60p RAW, which is enabled. It could even write to UHS-II SD without breaking a sweat, so it has little do to with that.

Canon you are shameful how can you put the 4k oversampling at 60fps in the r6 mk3 that has no high temperature setting and no air intake and not put it in the r5 mk2 which costs much more?!? But wake up and do this damn firmware update and give the 4k overcamoyed at 60fps on the r5 mk2 !!! You're ridiculous!!!
