Canon Officially Announces the Canon RF 45mm f/1.2 STM

If you want the vintage 1.2 look, you can already buy a used EF 50mm 1.2 L for a similar price. You get better build quality, weather sealing and USM on top. In that sense, this new lens doesn't really add much to the table. I would rather get the EF lens, personally.

As far as I know, the USM on the EF 1.2 isn't exactly known for being a great implementation...

I think the 3 others lenses will be announced later in November, hopefully there will be a f2.0 zoom.
Yes, yes, please! I almost bought the 28-70mm F2 for 2k recently because I am so tempted. I love the images of this lens BUT I can't manage its weight and size all the time. Hopefully, a much lighter zoom such as the two Sonys are in the pipeline. Of course, then I´d still have to wait a couple of years for a decent price. But knowing it exist, would make me patient :)

This is by now the best review I found, because it goes at 100% crops in both centre and corners (no other review that I found went that deep); the images speaks for themselves about sharpness and chromatic aberrations

I mean... I would just love to throw in a couple more hundred or even double the price to get rid of the excessive CA's. Get a bit more sharpness. And a weather sealed construction.

Theres still that big gap between entry level and big heavy pro glass in Canons lens strategy. Only the new 2.8 zooms seem to target the $1k price point. Why not primes?

Yeah, there's a fairly large gap between this lens and the 50/1.4L RF VCM which would really check all the boxes for me if I were going to use the 50 more extensively. I think that the new 45/1.2 fills something of a gap between the 50/1.8 and the VCM lens. I see what you mean though.

Sounds like a description for RF 50mm 1.2. Doubtful Canon as a business strategy is willing to spend lots of money on a new lens line to cannibalize and reduce profitability of their existing L lineup. Even Sigma's 50mm 1.2 is $1400msrp. You will have to look toward Chinese lens companies like Songraw to push optically corrected 1.2 lenses below $1000.

First reviews look promising, so I decided to rent it and I will have it for a weekend in November. I'll compare side by side with the 50mm VCM for my personal use. I have the feeling that I'll probably stick with the VCM, but I am curious none the less. Also, if (and I hope so) Canon decides to make more prime lenses like this one, I´d like to get a feel for this type of lens. Maybe there is a preorder in one of the future lenses for me. Who knows...

Mmm, finally a lens that has the potential of having some character, in the ever so frustrating lineup of lenses that Canon has released up to this point. I mean wjo needs all these VCM lenses? Canon was stuck with either cheap quality lenses at not so cheap prices with their F1.8-F2 offerings, or exorbitant ultra sharp lenses at 2000$+, neither of which reqlly had the qualities of the old EF lenses.

It seems Canon is going after Nikon with their F1.4 lineup of lenses, which were designed with a vintage touch from the 90s in mind, and a reasonable price point. But these lenses did render nicely despite the lower sharpness metrics, hopefully Canon does not cripple this lens too much.

As many of you know, I’m pretty huge on the bang for the buck lenses

The king of bang-for-the-buck today is Chinese glass. Have you considered picking up a used E or Z mount camera to try some of this out? It almost boggles the mind how good some of this glass is for the price. (And if you work out how to order directly from the Chinese sites, prices get even lower. Sometimes a LOT lower.)

I gave my thoughts on this lens.

some of you may like my thoughts, some of you may hate them. don't come after me for T* though ;)
You are not alone with your thoughts.
A lens to play with, but not for me. If sharpness did set in from f/4, why not, but this is not the case...
I'll keep using my 1,8/50 or the 2,8/60 Makro Elmarit R.
