Way Too Soon: A Canon EOS R5 Mark III Wishlist

1. ***
2. ***
3. *** (yes, even my old 6D has it!)
4. 2 x CF Express
5. better AF (subjects still small in the frame are often lost; branches and grass often confuse the AF)
6. better high ISO performance
7. star tracking (Pentax can do it)
8. better battery life
9. higher-res back LCD screen
10. fix the connectivity setup process (both WiFi and Bluetooth)
Is there a technical reason why Canon has taken out *** the last few years?

For me, better battery life (larger battery and camera body is fine) and better autofocus system for wildlife would be amazing.

Battery life would be my guess.
That makes sense I always had to turn it off in the last 5 series camera I had that had ***. Canon really needs to move to a larger battery format for these modern mirrorless cameras. Things like pre-capture just zap the battery.

It would be not be ideal to buy all new batteries but for a longer battery life it would be worth it for me at least.

I do wonder what that would look like. Seems the non grip bodies from all the major manufacturers use two 18500 cells in a plastic case. Maybe pouch cells or a straight up non removable battery could squeeze out a little more juice. The latter obviously wouldn’t be very popular amongst the current crowd. Anything else would necessitate making the camera bigger I think.

It would be nice if they made charging the batteries a little more convenient. Give me a USB-C charger and let it charge faster than 1.0A. Then perhaps the lower life would be a little more tolerable

3 level shutter button, instead of 2.
Light Press: Same as now, activates AF, and exposure.
Medium Press: Same as now, takes one or more photos depending on settings. 5fps would be a logical setting.
Hard Press: Motor drive at full speed, with pre-capture! Servo-AF

The idea here is you can walk around taking snaps, one shot, two shots, but when the action starts, blaze away.

ISO is only marginally worse when you're above 6400, 12800 seems to be where the detail last holds up. How often are you up past 6400 to begin with? This is really a feeble argument. Invest in faster glass maybe? All of a sudden everyone is afraid of noise. I have no problem with noise on these cameras, they are far better than anything from the DSLR era. People just complain about everything today.
Well, let’s see if this holds water…
Shooting wildlife at dusk or dawn, subjects are alive, not dead, they move so the shutter speed has to be at least 1/500s.
Lens is 600mm f 4/0, wide open.
Even so, the ISO for sure will be higher than 12800.
How’s that “ Invest in faster glass” working for you here?

For starters, how about moving out of the ancient fixed C1, C2, C3 that represented a bygone era when there weren't so many options to set on your SLR and understand that as you push out myriad setting options and features on a MILC we need at least C4, C5, & C6!!!!!!!

The R5II tops out at 600Mbyte/s, which is a third of the CFe 2 maximum, so i don’t think the R6III will hit more than 1800MB/s.
i haven't bought any cfe v4 cards, but there are readers for them, and it might be a bunch quicker to download the files to our computers. currently with pre-capture adn 12 FPS, i can get 13K RAWS per shoot and that takes several hours to transfer.

I have both a CFe4 card as well a matching reader :) It is indeed great to see stills and video move to my computer with 2.5GByte/s on average. Well, 'see' is a bit of a stretch when you only have a handful of stills, I press return and the stills are suddenly there :)

Yes, that will definitely help. I recently downloaded some more photos:
LEXAR 512 GB PRO Type B Gold 4.0 series 512GB - R3600/W3300MB/s
CFexpress Type B memory card reader ProGrade Digital | USB 4.0
About 100GB
3004 files in C-raw
Less than 5 minutes (did not clock it exactly)

I’ve been looking for that very card, and I don’t really understand why, since it seems to be one of the fastest card on the market, I can’t find it in stores, but only on Amazon (I’m in Québec).

I see plenty of really slower cards for higher prices, thaugh. Any reason for that?

My search today surprised me. I see this memory card is still for sale from several suppliers (I live in the Netherlands). But the price? Wow, it's almost doubled. It's currently for sale for around €555 (including 21% VAT). I've bought the card twice (so I have two). They were for €289 and €279 (including 21% VAT). Apparently, there's high demand and a shortage. I bought one in June and the other in August this year.

Edit: I just found a sales point where the price of the card is €384 (incl. 21% VAT) - this is not a camera shop. I don't see a difference but the difference in price surprises me.

I use Prograde cards (and a Prograde reader), they are nearly as fast with a 3400 MB/s read speed.

I bought them in March 2025 when they were in the 'Deal Zone' and I paid $594 the pair of 1 TB cards linked above that are currently sell for $627, and it was probably about that list price (maybe it was a little higher) when I bought them 'on sale'.

Canon’s EOS R5 Mark III is expected between late 2027 to mid-2028, but that’s exactly why now is the time to speak up. Once specs are finalized, it’s too late to shape what the next generation of this popular hybrid camera will become.

When customising buttons, I would like (a) options to assign any function to any button (no idea why they limit it) and (b) have the option to press+hold or toggle on/off.
And a bigger buffer.
And zebras/blinkies in the VF

I don't know about anybody else, but I would like to have the option to set one of the back buttons to manual focus momentarily. I do wildlife photography and sometimes the autofocus likes to lock on a nearby branch, leaf, or whatever, but not the critter I want to capture. Time is of the essences when shooting wildlife. Using the switch on the lens, movement of the camera lens costs valuable time. With the recent update to the R5mkII, it has only made focusing worse. A quick access to manual focus would help me make an adjustment to the focus needed to get the sharp picture.
set your lens to 'full time manual' and half-press the shutter button while turning the focus ring.
