What is the New Gear Going to Cost?

So, if true, the price for 14mm sounds too steep...
More than you are willing to pay, you mean? That's fine.

For some comparators, the Sigma 14/1.4 is $1800 and is much larger/heavier than the current Canon VCM lenses, so if the Canon 14/1.4 conforms to that lineup then it will be much smaller and lighter. The 1/2-stop slower Sony 14/1.8 is $1750. Taken together, I think that means the $2600 price is 'reasonable' given the landscape. Yes, it's expensive. So is the 24-105/2.8, etc.

The price of the G7X III is totally insane if it's really just a paintjob.
For a 6 year old camera that was $600-700 in 2020. Not even worth it, if they added a firmware update to this.
Canon, you are not Fujifilm and this isn't a camera with an APS-C sensor. *smh*

Too steep for a certainly excellent 14mm f/1,4?
Such lenses need extremely expensive optical glass, are produced in rather small quantities.
But you can get 14mm for far less money, if you don't need f/1,4, there's the 14-35 zoom.
I find this price to be very acceptable, not cheap, but ok.

Paint jobs are sometimes tremendously expensive.
Metallic paint option for cars? Between $500 and $5000 (or more), depending on the make and model. Real cost? $100 maximum. :p

Similar to Nikon's body/mid priced telephotos vs Canon options, it may be cheaper to buy a Sony kit just for astro - especially if you aren't using it that much.

eg using the A7iii or A7iv (even astro-modded) + FE14/1.8 (or Sigma 14.1.4) + FE20/1.8 (or Sigma 20/1.4)

There is also a greater chance for discounted or second hand bodies and lenses so hard to argue against.
I have waited for any discounts for the RF20/1.4 or second hand in the Australian market and nothing available.

I have no doubt about the quality of the RF lenses but Canon is happy to price themselves out of specific niches.

Hard to argue against the the Sony f1.8 versions (for only 2/3 stop difference) or the Sigma f1.4 versions. The question is whether the difference in performance is warranted for your use case.
Of course, for those with deep pockets, it is a no-brainer to stay with Canon.

I know you were kidding, but a car is actual work to paint vs just mixing some colors into a plastic mold.
No, in a car factory, it's just a matter of using a metallic paint in a fully automated robotised painting process, instead of a non-metallic one. It takes a few seconds for the paint-robot to switch paints. The paint itself costs a few $ more if it is a metallic one. But the customer is charged lots more. A "special" taste is what you pay for, the same applies to special edition cameras. Vanity always had its price...
