I wouldn't think the motor type matters since everyone uses VCM, though they probaby all do them a little bit different. It's probably the physical mount, electronics and algorithms. I'm not 100% sure though.

OEM lenses will always perform better than third party companies. Canon and others don't give access to their proprietary algorithms to approved lenses from Sigma and Tamron.

Are you sure? I have the impression that Canon cooperation has been pretty close regarding the RF-S lenses from Sigma (and Tamron). From what I hear the AF-performance of the Sigma lenses is also better on RF mount than on other mounts. Also Sigma lenses (and Tamron?) gets firmware updates through the camerabody like Canon's own RF lenses do.

Voice coil motors are not a Canon invention. Nikon uses voice coil motors in it’s telelenses (they call it Silky Swift VCM (SSVCM)). And voice coil motors are used for other applications as well, e.g. medical and automtive.

Yup. The term “voice coil” originally comes from the electrical wire wound in a coil in a loudspeaker. Audio frequency current flowing through the voice coil, placed around a permanent magnet, causes the loudspeaker paper cone to move in or out as the magnetic field created by the voice coil either adds to or repels the permanent magnet. The moving speaker cone causes air pressure changes we call sound.

I don't have a VCM RF lens for reference, but... well, see for yourself. It's quick, it doesn't focus hunt. And whatever Yongnuo uses is already inaudible.

I don't have a VCM RF lens for reference, but... well, see for yourself. It's quick, it doesn't focus hunt. And whatever Yongnuo uses is already inaudible.

Speed looks decent enough, especially because it is changing focus from far to close. I can't wait for them to fill their lineup. I already want to buy the 50mm just to test it.

Yeah. The XS is only 23cm from the front glass, so that video is a “torture test” from macro to distance. Not bad for $220.

If you want 56mm as a portrait lens, their 85mm is full-frame and said to be near perfect optically. But it is a bit older than the aps-c 1.4s and 1.8s.

…I do wish that 11mm came in RF mount.

To be honest the only lens that I want is 28mm. I don't even need it to be perfect. Sadly, nobody seems to want to do them because they are not cool enough and smartphones already default to that focal. But I hope that Yongnuo will start to produce so many designs that eventually they'll stumble into it.

There's the RF 28mm pancake.

I have an EF-S Sigma 30mm 1.4 myself! While not quite a pancake:



It's fantastic.. But too narrow for me on APS-C. It turns out I mostly shoot >24mm or <70mm, and its autofocus is too noisy for video. Hence I got the Yongnuo to replace it, and intend to sell this Sigma 30.

There's also a couple of EF 28mms (like the full-frame Sigma 28mm),the manual focus Thypoch Simeria 28mm 1.4, and the 28mm Laowa Argus 1.2.

Post your shots from Canon's first RF pancake lens!

I just took mine out of the box, here's my first shot with it. I'll have more in a few weeks, since I'll be bringing this convenient little lens on vacation.

Photo quality of the pancake is nice, but I need an AF that works better than my 28mm EF so I'll have to skip...
