What’s Coming Next from Canon?

Look at Apple, they will resort to comparing a M5 or M4 with the M1 chip to make it seem more impressive as we are talking ms’s and the M4 compared to the M3 just doesn’t sell as well from an advertising perspective, even with people that have an 8-second attention span. What I care able is how fast I can process a large file in Lightroom or how quickly I can edit and process a video in Final Cut Pro.
I am happy with the comparisons as I got one of the first 16" M1 and are still using it today.... but I get your point.

I've saved up for the M6 version with hopefully an OLED screen and a significant processing boost over M5. At least a 5 year lifecycle makes sense for me and I still should get back something as a trade-in.
I don't see the point of touchscreen though. Hard enough to keep the current screen clean enough to remove backscatter and bright pixels from shots without competition from fingerprint marks.
Going between my corporate PC and my personal MacBook Pro reminds me of how good macbook pros are!

Me too but I can't see it being cheaper than the very similar RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM if it's an L lens I would expect it to be at least 10% more expensive.
If Canon made a non L 300-600mm f/5.6 as they did with the RF 200-800 using cheaper elements and coatings and consumer grade materials then it should be a bit cheaper than the RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS USM but personally I'd rather they made it a full on L lens and hopefully get the weight down and add a built in 1.4 extender for 420-840mm f/8 with it engaged. I'd be happy to save up for this even if it's USD $12,000
Agreed. Honestly, I would be content if Canon just made the same lens as Sony (100-400 mm f4.5) with a similar weight. As I get older being able to carry smaller lenses is a huge benefit. What would be really cool would be a 100-400 mm f4.5 DO with a built-in 1.4x TC at less than 5 lbs. I would buy it in a heartbeat.

While I do use Canon primarily I do own other systems (e.g., Nikon Z8 with Nikon 800 mm f6.3 lens). Hopefully by year's end we have a better idea of what Canon will do in the $4K to $7K telephoto zoom department. Otherwise, I might have to give Sony a try (love some of their lens, but tend not to like their cameras).

Am I the only one who doesn't understand the "hype" about the Sony 4,5/100-400?
The EF 4,5-5,6 100-400 cost half, was lighter and at longer focals about 1/2 aperture slower...
The Sony is certainly a brillant lens, but I still don't get it.

Waiting on Canon to announce the updated 400 2.8; hopefully with a switchable teleconverter. If they have developed the updated 400mm 2.8; they should do this before the World Cup starts!

I'm not interested in a fixed 5.6 300-600mm lens for $7000+.

I'll use my f2.8 70-200Z with or without a teleconverter & keep my 100-500mm to fill in the low end.

The only thing I'd consider buying body wise at this point is an R1 or R3 form factor camera with a higher megapixel (45MPx or more) sensor.
Lens wise... I'm quite happy with 28-70 f/2 and 24-105 f/2.8, and 70-200 f/2.8 and 100-500 f/4.5-7.1 already covers most of what I need for the tele end.

If they can make a wider range version of the 28-70 f/2 without compromising too much on weight or quality, I wouldn't say no to that.
I also would probably buy a huge aperture 50mm f/1 or something if they decided to go along in the big aperture race. A 50mm f/1.2 at four thirds of a stop faster than the 28-70 f/2 I can sort of still overcome by just bumping ISO for low light stuff, but at f/1 with two full stops of difference, that'd be worth doing a lens swap for.

None of those things I've heard very concrete rumors about (except a wider range 28-70), so we'll see. I'm not in a great hurry.

A mohol by som byť v pokušení kúpiť si R3 II s predsnímaním, najmä ak si môžem nastaviť časový interval, viac MP a globálnu uzávierku, ak má dobrý dynamický rozsah, čo všetko by podľa mňa malo byť na zozname želaní väčšiny súčasných majiteľov R3.

On my list is a new brighter 100-500 ... I'm thinking f3.5-5.6 ... 2/3 stops down 😊
Makmut - my understanding of the physics of optics is that a faster 100-500 would have to also be
larger (diameter). That means it will be both heavier and a lot more expensive. When I got the R5m2
I didn't understand how much importance the extra dynamic range of the sensor would be. As in -
the R5m2 made my RF 100-500 better. Perhaps "better glass" might mean "better tech in the body"?

I started switching to Sony long time ago (2012?) because I wanted to use my Canon FD lenses on a digital camera, the first was a NEX-3 and later I went full frame (A7) but I also keep my Sony APS-C system. Now I am in the market for a video camera, I do not have any good Sony video capable camera (A6600 and A7R3a are my current best and they are very good for photo but limited and cumbersome for video and I also want a separate system for video). I still have my Canon systems (FD-film, EF-film and EF-S-digital and have started to look for a Canon mirrorless camera with good video and the possibiity to use EF/EF-S lenses. The R6III ($3900 in Sweden) and R6V ($3200) are too expensive for me, I am therefore looking for something like the R8. To the point: For R8 mark 2 I want IBIS and I do not want a selfie-type of screen but a photo/video-oriented flipup screen. A 32 Mpix sensor would be good for the use of EF-S lenses in 4k video. I already have an AE-1 so no need to imitate it...

I was thinking something similar this morning, but a full stop improvement so the Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM Lens ($2799 currently) becomes the:

Canon RF 100-500 mm f3.2-5 L IS USM (? $4499-4999)

which would compete with the newly released Sony FE 100-400 F4.5 GM OSS ($4298)

While the Sony is a constant aperture versus a variable for the Canon, with auto ISO, to me a variable aperture isn't a big deal, if the Canon is a full stop faster at the short end and probably about the same at 400

The entrance pupil is 100mm, less than the 107mm on the 100-300 f2.8 and the proposed 300-600 f5.6, so smaller and lighter than the 100-300 f2.8

If it is built so it can use the extenders:

1.4x converter gives you a RF 140-700 mm f4.5-7.1 L IS USM
2x converter gives you a RF 200-1000 mm f6.3-9 L IS USM

which gives you an extra 200mm at the far end over the non-L
Canon RF 200-800 f6.3-9 IS USM

The wildlife photographers seem pretty impressed, especially on the A7RVI (66.8 MP) so they have the crop ability. I think the problem with a RF 300-600 f 5.6 is the entrance pupil of 107 mm, the same as on the 100-300 f2.8 ($10599) so I agree with those saying that being bigger/heavier will translate into a higher price, slapping a built-in 1.4x will push the price even higher. The RF 100-500 f4.5-7.1 is well liked, making a faster version might be a more viable path for Canon.
