Canon’s 2024 Roadmap, and the timeline surprised us [CR3]

By that logic, the R1 is the replacement body for the R3.
I haven't tracked the R3 pricing but I wonder if the Z9 pricing did affect it albeit with few switchers.
If the R3 remained (or replaced with R3ii) then the only price point for R1 would be a reasonable step up and the Z9 (or Z9ii) looks even better value.

Perhaps the R1 will replace the R3... The R3 could have been an interim product as the R1 tech wasn't ready like R vs R5.

At the end of the day, all we know is the products and the pricing today and the R5 pricing fits the normal product lifecycle curve at the end of its life.
"Logic" in forecasting is always problematic. There are only 3 things for sure about a forecast....
It is wrong.
The further out it goes, the more wrong it is.
It is better to have a forecast than not having a forecast.

On a positive note, I am able to travel with my Canon R3 this summer on some epic adventures photographing wildlife. Worrying about, when a camera is released is the least of my concerns (although knowing the specs would be cool).

****** the R1. (Sorry for strong language, but it's directed at hardware and not people, so it might be ok)
That beast of a camera is for nerds and Scrooge McDuck.
As an owner of an R7 and an R6 I am absolutely fascinated by a possible R5II as a replacement for my two camera bodys.
Especially since I tried the R3s eyetracking at the photopia last year, which absolutely blew my mind.
If they bring eyetracking in the R5mark2, I will buy it, even if it is more expensive than the original R5

I've suspected that the R5II would come soon. Last November 2023, Japan had a large price drop in the retail of the R5. The price has stayed pretty stable for the entire production of the R5. So it was a good indicator that something newer is coming.

I'm really looking forwards to seeing how Canon have progressed their mk II over the previous R5. I wouldn't be suprised to see the same MP caount as the current R5 too. I suspect this is awarm upgrade...not a big upgrade.
Suspect the R5II will have a stacked sensor a huge upgrade over the R5

Canon HAVE to get a move on with the R5 MkII. From Yodobashi Japan's latest sales figures, the R5 MkI sales have really dried up, and the only model Canon now have in the top 10 sales list is the R6 MkII (and that's not even in the top 5). They're just handing business over to Sony and Nikon if they don't have an updated body for folks to buy.

Top 10 camera sales:

  1. Sony α7C II body
  2. Sony A9III
  3. Sony α7 IV with kit lens
  4. Sony α7C II with kit lens
  5. Sony α7 IV body
  6. Canon EOS R6 Mark II Body
  7. Nikon Z 8
  8. Hasselblad 907X & CFV 100C
  9. Sony α7R V body
  10. Nikon ZFc with kit lens
Those are snapshot numbers from some vendor site you pulled up. In reality, Sony has actually lost market share to Canon. Canon is still the big dog on block by a wide margin. The R5 as once did the 5D will always be the tool of choice. The R5 is the most rented camera in the USA. Sony will always be begind Canon. The landscape hasn't changed in decades. Since the 5D nearly drove Sony Imaging into bankruptcy.

Or maybe Canon decided to handle it like Nikon did with the Z9. Have a development announcement in April/ May and maybe one at the end of June/ beginning of July and then tell everybody that the pro photographers at the olympics will show-case the R1. After the games they can fix every last bug and release it in September.
The R1 will be announced well before the summer Olympics. And will be shipped to Paris in crate loads as customary. The R1 will be in hands of photographers well before opening ceremonies.

In other words as was once reported, the R5II is in production. Canon is still producing ample R5II units for distribution, as there will be far more R5 units sold than R1. There are but so many LCD displays and drivers. The R5II has been reported to be in production for like 2 months now. I suspect once Canon has sufficient units to ship to its major markets it will make an announcement. Canon will not need as many months for the R1.

My guess is this article, here and/or possibly elsewhere, will mean that a-hole youtuber O.F. will post 5-7 videos in 24 hours, claiming the same which came from HIS sources. I am glad new equipment is coming, it shows Canon is progressing, creating, innovating, but if I sold one of my kidneys now, I am buying glass with it, not another new camera.
Actually he quoted and gave credit to "Canon Rumors".

This proves that the Canon R3 was in fact the Canon R1. IMO there was a lot of pressure from the competition and they had to call the R1 the R3
Actually it does not. Canon always releases it's flagship sports camera during an Olympic year. The R3 readout speed is fast but not quite fast enough. The Nikon Z9 has the fastest readout speed. The R3s readout speed is not on an EOS R1 level. It doesn't have what it takes to be the flagship. Good but not good enough. It has to have equal or better readout speed than the Nikon Z9 or Sony A1. The R1 is said to have the fastest readout speed.

With CR hedging a CR3 on this infomation, I would bet that one of the devices registered with the regulators is undeed the EOS R5 II rather than the R1. And if the R5 II has indeed been field tested and in production as remored, then its likely to be announced sooner than later. Canon has simply kept that unformation tight. As it did with the R5. Surprising everyone.
