If you have never been to the Sax-Zim Bog in northern Minnesota, it is a must go in the winter for those 2 owl species alone. It is a black spruce bog and covers almost 20 square miles. You basically drive around from sunrise to sunset and hope to find owls, with other birds mixed in between...

I watched a Common Merganser catch 2 frogs. I think they were already dead, laying on the lake floor, but still cool to watch. The second one was stolen by a male, Red-breasted Merganser. 7D mkll / EF600 f4 ll / 1.4x lll Jeremy

Don't get me wrong, we have plenty of juncos, it is just the Oregon subspecies that is rare for us. Yellow-bellied is not very common in the winter. we usually have them pass through in spring and a few may linger. Then we get them in the fall on the way back home. Jeremy

Thank you for the detailed response. I guess I did not fully look into the CRAW before. I've been seeing pretty decent photos at ISO 6400, which is why I was asking. I don't think a really close up photo of a subject at a high ISO is a good judge of the capabilities, though. Something 50' away...
