I've been on the fence about buying a 5d2 kit and watching the prices but I just checked tonight and it's up 100 dollars matching my local vendors and last week everyone online had it for 2699. Does this mean something new might show up or stock is dwindling down and so price goes up? It's starting to not seem like a good deal to me anymore.

I noticed the same thing and I'm in the same situation as you. I think that Canon is raising the price because it's soon going to be discontinued.
The rebate of 200$ never moved. It's the original price that passed from 2800 to 3000. Anyway, I still think I should get it. I will be using it for stills so the Mk III isn't justified for the extra 1500$.

Prices go up and down. Canon has started another of its rebate sales. The catch, and its a big one, is that the rebate is figured off the MSRP, and dealers are required to do it that way if they want Canon to reimburse them for the rebate.
What this often means to you and me, is that the price goes up. Yes, its a scam, and I wish some of our attorney generals would step in and levy a big fine.
