So what happened here is that Canon supposedly hasn't yet finished developing a true successor to the 5d MKII, so they decide to rename and slash price of their current top-of-the line camera, as the 1dx is coming anyway?

I'll tell you, if this is the way you look at things, and I sure am looking at things that way, the 5dIII could be the camera I always wanted. A 1d body for the price and size of a 5d.

I never could afford a 1dsIII and it is the camera I truly desired to own, now at half price for a brand new body, it'll make me quite happy ;D.

A used 1Ds3 is a great camera - almost a sports version of the 5D2 with its full pro AF , 5fps and twin cards. Only limitiation is the max iso @3200 and at the price of a 5D2

I take your post to mean the 5DIII will essentially be a cheaper, smaller 1DsIII. Even if Canon gives the 5D successor a much improved AF and a better frame rate, it won't be that. Build quality, weather sealing, customizations (ability to set max/min aperture and shutter speed), flash sync speed, etc., will remain differentiators.

In 2 years, the 1Ds III will STILL be an amazing camera. The other options out there don't change the fact that it has a great AF, great IQ, and all around great feeling.

It's worth every penny -- especially as cameras with video capabilities start to dominate the market. If you don't need that, buy 2 of them! :P

Indeed - I have taken this path. Even good for wildlife. Nothing beats a full picture with 21mp of top IQ - attached is from yesterday

They also don't change the fact that it's 7000 euros. And if I'm being paid 100 euros a shoot, how many years would it take for me to save enough money for one?

Used in the UK they are now about 2000 euros - about the same prince as a new 5DII, and you get a better camera if high iso is not an issue

If you can get 1DS III for that price, scoop them up. Your price sounds like a 1D MK III price over here.

If you'd be nice enough to link me towards classified adds, or ebay etc. where there are used 1ds's at that price, I'd be thankfull. 1ds mk II goes for 2000 here.

There are so few 1Ds3 on the market that the market price varies enormously. I paid £1950 for mine yet you see then up to £3000

I see used 1D4 have started to come down. I paid £2900 for mine in September - but now they are starting to be seen at about £2700 (in ++++ condition)

If I see a good 1D4 or 1Ds3 I might be tempted buy it for a backup and sell the 5DII

1Ds2 are about 1200 euros here
Nearly every used 1Ds3 on ebay right now is going for about US $5000 or more. Nobody is going to sell that camera (new or used) for anywhere near the price of a 5dm3 / 5dmx.

Why not? The 5DX will have the same MP, probably more fps, hopefully AF that is as good or better, imrpoved liveview/video, etc. What will lack? And it comes in a smaller, lighter form factor. Who would pay more for a 1Ds3 or even close to as much for one as a 5DX (assuming there is nothing something they really messed up with the 5DX). I foresee an utter plunge in 1Ds3 value very soon.

... and if you can get a 1Ds3 at the right price you wont be sitting on your hands for the next 6 months to a year waiting for the 5Dx,

I hope the 5Dx will have the functionality of the 1Ds3 plus the high ISO as the 1Ds3 is now my body of choice as THE general purpose camera. It was totally unexpected - I do a lot of informal potraits which I though the 1Ds3 would be good at (it is VERY good at them) only to find it is a VERY good allrounder too

I bought my second hand 1Ds MkIII last year to pair my 5D MkII. I paid for it 3600 euro. It was in perfect conditions with 8000 shots. Searching for it I found cheaper examples but in very poor conditions. 1Ds is a typical pro work horse and very often when they are for sale for peanuts they are at the terminal stage.
By the way, 1Ds MkIII and 5D MkII are both excellent cameras and I use both indifferently...

For IQ the 1Ds3 is the best Camera Canon has, that you can buy. (1Dx isn't out at the time of writing).

Guaranteed, no contest. I use it for every wedding and portrait I do.

I own a 5D2 and 1D4 as backup.

The only things better are medium format and film.
