100-400mm ii - Question on loudness of IS

Hi!

We bought an Canon 100-400 version II and I have an question of the loudness of the IS:
Wenn I start the autofocus, the IS makes an strange and loud sound when it begins to work, also when it stops. The sound is like when you close the aperture of your lens if you want to check the sharpness when you shoot macro. The sound is 3 to 4 times louder. Is this normal?
The IS works. It is just this loud sound.
My husband is on studies in Asia, so I can not ask him.

Thank you
Daniela

One person's loud is another's normal...

Do you have any other Canon IS lenses to compare to?

Mine is noticeable when composing, but not much louder than my 70-200mm. Maybe slightly, but it sure works great.

Since the lens and its IS are working, and if the noise isn't loud enough to get you declared a public nuisance when using it ;), I would demonstrate it your husband when he returns home, if that won't be after the expiration of the warranty. (I infer from your message that he is more familiar with the equipment than you, and that he might be gone for a while.) If warranty expiration is an issue, I'd have it checked out by a Canon service center. If it's new, you might want to exchange it for a replacement from your vendor.

I've had my 100-400 II for just over a year now, and five other IS lenses to compare it to, including the 70-200/2.8L IS II. The sounds emanating from neither the autofocus nor the IS in the 100-400 have given me the slightest pause.

Thank you
My husband is in Asia for a lot of weeks, so I am afraid to miss an exchange-time-limit.
The starting/ending sound of the IS is nearly as loud as the shutter in silent mode.

As I ordered it online, I will better send it back and try to get an exchange - if possible
