100mm f2.8 HIS Macro question!

Just a question for owner's of this lens - I just got mine today from BHphoto and I noticed that the HIS system sounds kinda odd. Maybe I'm just not used to it - as most lenses I've owned haven't had IS/HIS - so it's just a new sound but it just seemed weird.

Turned it off too to make sure it wasn't the af system or anything else and it's only present when HIS is enabled.

It's normal. If you find that noise off-putting, you should hear the IS on my ef300 f/4. It's like a little train wreck going on in there...

i have to say it has let out some hideous noises at times, not so much lately though (hope it is still working as well as when it was noisy, sometimes I almost feel like not)

it was especially prone to horrible noises if you went to restart it before it finishing spooling down from the last shot

My lens sometimes makes a hideous noise when I activate the IS and the lens is pointing down. After reading that a different noise level is to be expected (other than the rather quiet latest 70-200L/300L-IS) I just ignore it.

The one thing that makes me worry is the rumor that the HIS is more delicate than standard IS, and a louder noise level means it's damaged. But my lens has been doing this from day one.

I find HIS slightly noisier when moving body in two planes, as expected , but still fairly quiet.
