24-70 2.8 focus ring doesn't grab

The film is another lens, the 70-200. But I have the same problem with my 24-70.

Focus scale doesn't always move when I turn the focus ring. Any ideas what could be wrong? Is it common?

I had this happen on two lenses... One of which was the 70-200 II... Canon replaced the intermediate barrel assembly inside the lens. I guess sometimes they can just tighten up the clutch or something, but I suppose it depends on the lens.

I assume it is the same with the 24-70, but may only require tightening a few screws internally.
