430EX II AF assist for 1D X/5DIII

Finally got around to testing the AF assist lamp coverage of the 430EX II with the 61-pt AF system of the 1D X (and 5DIII). With a focal length of wider than 35mm, the outermost columns (which are f/5.6-sensitive lines) are outside of the coverage area. At 35mm and longer focal lengths, the 430EX II's assist lamp covers all 61 points.

The 600EX-RT provides full coverage, of course.

great i found my 5dmk3 with 430 ex2 works better with af assist lamp turned off.
can you tell me with the 600ex-rt and st-e3 does it swith automatically to HSS using radio like my pocketwizards?i read it only works optically for HSS which puts me off.

HSS should work fine with radio control from a 5DIII (or 1D X or T4i/650D), but with a pre-2012 camera you need to use optical control for HSS.
