The 5DII sold with 2 kits 24-105(big saving) and 24-70 (small savings).
Was the 24-70 kit from Canon, i.e. 5DII with lens in one box with camera and lens name printed on the outside? I'm sure retailers offered bundles with the 24-70 but I'm not aware of any 'official' kits.

Google finds only one 5DII kit box and that has a 24-105L printed on it so now I'm pretty much convinced that the 24-70 'kit' actually is a bundle of the body+lens. Some European retailers even have 5DII with 16-35L selling as a 'kit'.
The price of these bundles is a bit better than if you would buy them separately so I don't mind even if it's not officially a 'kit' ;)

Most people voted for the lens that is currently being bundled by Canon - the 24/105mm f/4 IS. I think this is the safest vote however I'm hoping Canon will come out with the 24/105mm f/4 IS II and surprise us by placing it together with the new 5D Mark III.

OTOH, If Canon would offer another 5DIII kit with the new 24-70 f/2.8 II, that would be a combination NOBODY yet had. So, many users of the current 24-70L f/2.8 would maybe consider upgrading at the same time they upgrade their body (to 5DIII). While it would cost a fortune (around $5k?), it could sell in good amounts among enthousiasts. Kit will be cheaper and lots of people are probably waiting for both the 5DIII and 24-70 f/2.8L II.

That would be a good reason. OTOH, a 24-70 f/2.8 II would be a highly popular lens and would sell like hotcakes at full retail so Canon may not want to put in a kit at a reduced price. The 24-105mm is still the best choice for a new user and many (maybe most?) upgrading to the 5D3 might be less price conscious (i.e. they just want the 5D3 sooooo much they can taste it). Anyway, I'm just having some fun with speculating... the choices for kits is purely a business decision to drive sales and generally I think they won't put a lens in a kit that would be highly desired for specific/compelling/professional reasons.

I would happily fork up to $4.25k for a 5d3 kit with a 24-70mm f2.8 IS

I expect it will be whatever latest 24-105 or 24-70... but I find that an uninspired choice...

It seems the first buyers/early adopters of the 5D M3 will be those upgrading from a 5D M2. And there may be some like me who decided to wait on a full-body due to the rumors and go for the 7D for its albeit crop excellent action shoot credentials.

For those with 5D M2's, I suspect most already have one or perhaps both of those workhorse lens. Why do they need to buy the kit?

I am in the 7D camp. I fully plan to buy a full body, but the expectations of a M3 convinced me to go the other direction - and with the $200 rebate last spring, the 7D was a good interim step for building up a full system. If there are any retailers out there doing their own kits - I hope that look at offering kits that replace EF-S situations of the crop body world.

My own personal wish kit would be a 5D M3 with 16-35mm f2.8 lens. I need to match or replace my current 10-22mm EF-S and a 16-35mm EF would be perfect. I already got the 24-105mm, so like the current 5D crowd a 5D M3 with that kit lens would be a big yawn. Hell, stuff a 50mm f1.4 as someone suggested! or maybe the 135mm f2.0 (test driving this coming weekend at an event).

Of course if this waiting game goes on too long, a 1Dx may become part of my budget.

Get creative Canon! - or at least take the cue big retailers. The 24-70 and 24-105 seems like a loser for the early adopters.
