5D MK III & 500mm 4.0 and 2.0x Extender

I´d like to buy an 5D MK3 Camera and an 500mm 4.0 lens with an 2x extender.
Is it true, that the 5D is not able to handle the 2x extender like the new 1D? (manual AF only)????

I´m not pleased about that. Where is the 7D MK II????? :'(

Only series 1 can AF on f/8 (except the 1DX which cant either)

My old Eos 1V & even the Eos 5 and Eos 3 are able to handle this lens. I tried it with the 3 and 1V on an bird photographer workshop. Wow. this lens is great. lighter than the old version and with an fast AF.

Are you refering to the Canon 500mm f/4 IS ver I? It is my understanding that the 500mm f/4 IS ver II is not available for purchase yet. If you want to buy the ver I of this lens, purchasing new is very unlikely and finding one used is also difficult and expensive.

The 500mm f/4 IS with the 1.4x extender (III or II) will autofocus with the 5d III and the 1D X and will give you a 700mm FL and a more than capable bird lens.

NO, your correct. Its a hardware limitation, so unless they change out the focus sensor, no f/8 focus.

Yes, i tried the Ver. 1. The new Version I was onlay able to take one shot and to hold it.
700mm ist not enough with an FF camera. The birds I´m looking for, aer very shy. So it´s very difficult to get a good shot.

I´cant understand why they don´t allow it? Is this feature so difficult to build or to create? Or is this just an limitation to sell expensive lenses.
Nikonians told me, that they will be able to do this with the 800. I don´t know if this is true. Maybe changing the brand???
