5D MkIII w/BG-E11 Date Time issue

I have noticed that occasionally when removing both batteries to be recharge, upon loading them back in my date and time have been wiped. The body was with out any battery for a while but I don't hunk this should be an issue.

Anyone else having this issue or heard of it?

Hmm...the clock button battery could be dead, but on a new camera that's extremely unlikely. Check the manual for how to go about replacing the clock button battery and try it. If it works, it's only a couple of bucks for the battery and probably not worth the hassle of a warranty claim. If it doesn't work, time to call up Canon.

Yeah sounds like what Drizz said. Same thing happens with computers and the battery on the motherboards. Iv bought brand new ones that we dead on arrival. 2-3 dollar fix. If not, exchange it if you have a return policy.

If you bought it from a local camera shop, you can take it to them to change the battery (if you don't want to), but no need to ship it off anywhere. Dead clock backup batteries happen, not often, but they do.

Thanks everyone. It just seem to start when I started using the grip. Something weird happen once attaching the grip where the camera didn't start back up. Maybe the clock battery got fried.

Well since it is a cheap fix I'll start there.

If it started just when you started using the grip, that's suspicious. It's Canon's grip? Not a 3rd party?

I wouldn't have expected any grip to cause problems with the clock battery, draining/frying it or otherwise.

Yeah it is the Canon grip. Definitely started with the grip. Not saying it isn't a coincidence but I emailed Canon CPS and I'm waiting to hear back. I'll post their response.

I do know that all my other settings stay, such as AFMA, CF settings, etc. Wouldn't they rely on the same power source as the clock to maintain?

It's possible those are stored in memory. Try using the camera for a bit without the grip and see if the time stays accurate. If so return the grip.

Yea, it's likely those settings are stored in a non-volatile memory space. The clock actually needs power to run to accurately keep time.

Canon also says it sounds like a clock battery issue and the those other settings are not dependent on it.
But after just going through motions I've found that removing the battery grip then reinstalling the camera will not boot.
The camera function perfectly without the grip. So I'm pretty sure I have defective grip and waiting to see what Canon's response will be. I hope it will just be a case of sending the grip in and not the camera too.
