File under 'it's officially called a 5D4 and someone is in huge trouble for doing this' or 'a non-authorized-reseller is cleverly beating everyone to the punch to amass pre-order notifications'?

In the past, lots of pages have been created for non existent cameras. The purpose is to draw those searching online for a potential new model to their site.

It means little or nothing.

B&H and Adorama have had search terms that lead to their sites as well.

The blank page has served its purpose, someone is helping advertise their site.

It also builds stats for search engine listings... the more hits it gets the higher it will be placed once actual information is available. call it a head-start, if you will. Same idea as what you were saying... that there's an actual motive behind it, most likely.

But I believe authorized resellers have a hard gag order to mention anything about the product as a listing on their site. So they have some click-bait for a google search, but it only brings them to the main site. Having an actual 5D4 listing* before the announcement -- even if just a pre-order -- would be viewed very negatively by Canon corporate.

I think DR posting their link is less dangerous for them as they are (to my knowledge) not authorized resellers, so they can pull shenanigans like this.

* for the main article, i.e. the 5D4 rig itself; 3rd party accessories hedging that they will work with the 5D4 before it is released have certainly happened at B&H and Amazon in the past.

I think that they are authorized sellers for several manufacturers, but the Chinese often tend to fudge on the rules. They deal with Canon China, which probably ignores minor things.

In the past, DR has shipped new models before the official shipping date, which is why we see often see images from new models coming out of China first.

For the first time, I'm going to pass on pre-ordering unless there is something not in the rumors that makes the camera irresistible. Early adopters will find limited raw processing support, and will need to use DPP, or RAW Therapee. Third party lenses, flashes, etc will need to be updated, I think that 6 months after they ship may be a good time to buy, if ever.

Of course, I want one right away, but right now, I plan on holding off.

And don't forget, you're stuck with stock black. As if.
