I'm very excited for this update if it will help with super low-light focusing (when using the assist from the speedlites).

However, I'm not sure how these updates are downloaded/installed. I've never done this before. Is it something which is downloaded via computer, placed onto my CF/SD card and then, once it's placed back into the camera it recognizes the new file? EOS Utility, maybe?

How many of you guys/gals have done this before? Is it difficult?

The only downside to the coming firmware is that it will kick
Magic Lantern back again, and will likely postpone the date
it gets out of its Alpha stadium, even temporarily render it
useless on the 5D MkIII.

Hoping that Canon copies all the useful tools in it might be
twisting fates arm too much.

Yes, your guess is pretty much correct ... you just have to make sure your battery is fully charged to ensure, the battery does not die during the update process ... but no worries detailed instructions are given by Canon (when you download the firmware.

I've done this several times, not at all difficult ... you will be able to do it very easily ... its as easy as any of the regular software that you normally install on your computer.

I just updated my my 5DM3 to 1.1.2 firmware. This was the first time that I have updated firmware on a Canon camera & I used to have a 7D as well. What surprised me is that the firmware version was only available for Windows & not a Mac. Why is this?? Is there an easy way to update the firmware using a Mac?? I did get my camera updated, but I had to scour the web for it. I would much rather go directly to the Canon USA website to get the update. Thanks in advance!!

The firmware is for the camera, and not for a computer. The installation is done by the camera. Download the files to the CF card, put it into the camera, and update. If necessary, extract any zipped files first.

Its a very similar process be it a computer, video card, camera or other electronic device. I've done it many times with no issues. In fact, I just picked up a old 40D that was way out of date firmware wide and updated it yesterday. I updated my computer Bios a week ago.
