5DS/R pricing and landscape use

Anybody care to speculate about 5DS/R prices in the next 6 months or so?

I would like to upgrade my 5d3 before next May or so. Was really hoping for a 5d4 by then, but I doubt that will happen at this point. So I am considering a 5dSR for landscapes, since my shooting season begins about April or so (unless we hear reliable 5d4 info by then and that ends up looking like a lot better choice). Just wondering what people think will happen on pricing in the upcoming Holiday season and next year.

Also, any 5ds/r users care to share their thoughts on using this for landscapes so far?

Thanks for any info!

Of course I am no fortune teller and I don't know where you are located.
I believe the prices will move a little different in Europe compared to the U.S.
When I look at the 5DS/R in Europe there has been little movement, esp. for the 5DS R.
I guess there is some space left for discounts, so it's just a question of when.
In Europe I don't believe that'll happen before but past Christmas.
In Germany we still have a 300,- Euro cash back running till end of January

and normally the prices will stay higher during such promotions.
OTOH if you can get access to that it might be interesting ;)

So you still have a lot of time. If I were you, I would stay calm, keep an eye on the prices and wait until late February to decide. You want to become used to your cam before strating real work, so i wouldn't wait till the last day, but you have time.

When I think back at the 5D2 and 5D3 the prices stayed high until about one year after release and you could see some decent discounts about 15 to 18 months after release.

I have no experience about those two and I wouldn't even know if to chose with or without AA filter, but...
If you want to stay with Canon this will be your prefered choice for landscapes, what else?

Of course those more into EXMOR sensor tech will say "Meh! Bad low ISO noise, not enough DR."
but here it's up to you to chose a Sony over the Canon because it depends on what you really see (in IQ difference) and what you really like (ergonomics, UI) and not what others want you to.

Until then have fun and do some great fall and winter landscapes ;)

I do not have any information to qualify price development, so that's a your-guess-is-as-good-as-mine.

For landscape use with this format, I do not see that you can find a better alternative than the 5DSR. In very exptreme conditions you may find (very minor) DR issues, but those will be very few. If you expose properly, low ISO noise is not an issue.

I have found the 5DSR to be a much more versatile camera than most (non users) believe it is. When you shoot handheld, you need to focus on being steady (or have fast shutter speeds). But I'm using it on landscape, portraits, wildlife and birds, both tripod mounted and handheld. Look at KeithBreazeal's air show shots:

I certainly have no insight on future pricing trends. I can only speculate based on what we have observed so far. Not sure where you are located and that makes a big difference. In the US prices have been dropping steadily since launch, my guess would be it will drop a little lower over the winter.

I have found the 5DSr to be terrific general use camera. As Eldar pointed out, it is very versatile but requires some changes to how you work including using faster shutter speeds than I would use with a lower resolution camera body. I use mine for almost everything, it is definately my choice for tripod mounted landscape work and works well for shots of the kids playing since its auto focus system is excellent. Its built like a tank and the controls and menus are familiar to those of us who been in the Canon system for a while. I recomment it highly.

Thanks for the input. I live in the US, and I guess we'll just see how prices some down. I suspect we'll see these bodies in the 3200 range regularly pretty soon.

So I guess it comes down to whether this or a 5d4 is better for tripod landscape work, and personally I think one will have to make a resolution (5dsr) vs better DR (5d4) choice. I think Canon intended the 5DSR to be their body for that purpose. For at least the next few years, I think pricing of the two will be comparable.

Like most here, I have considered Sony, but I love everything about Canon (except the oft-discussed minor DR difference) and really would rather spend time shooting than learn a new system.

I guess my main concern is getting a 5dsr and 6 months later finding the 5d4 has a sensor that has a better resolution/dr package, i.e. a canon answer to the d810.

I have the 5DS and almost exclusively use it for Landscape photography although Ive also used it for Macro work. The more I use this camera the more I like not only the resolution but the colors it produces and as I use the camera normally at 100 ISO (although not had any isuues up to 400 ISO) Ive not encountered noise issues which some testers have cliamed.
Ive some of the lenses Canon recommend using with this camera EF 16-35mm f4L IS USM, EF 24-70mm f4L IS USM, EF 100mm f2.8L IS USM & the EF 50 f1.8 STM but equally lenses like the preverbial EF 24-105mm f4L IS USM still look better with this camera.
Here in the UK the 5DS still retails at £ 2999 and the 5DS R at £ 3100 but I managed to get my 5DS at £ 2700 and got £ 165 off of the EF 24-70mm f4L IS USM I bought at the same time.
As Eldar states Ive used the camera hand-held at 60th sec with the 50mm and had no sharpness issues the only thing you have to be prepard for is the file sizes (have a big external drive) and the slightly longer loading times in LR or PS CC

I have been using this camera since early July and I love it. I have used the 5D3, the 1DX, and the 6D. The 5DSr has so much more latitude in the files in terms of colors and dynamic range. I happily use it up to ISO 6400 and find the noise is well controlled and pleasing at higher ISOs. With the extra resolution, there is a lot of room to add noise reduction. If I could have a camera with the files of the 5DSr and the speed of the 1DX, I would have a perfect camera.

You can get the 5Ds and -r for £1900-2000 in the UK already (RRP £2999 and 3199 respectively). I doubt it'll drop much more than that. I guess these are grey market imports - it's still up around RRP otherwise. The 5D3 never dropped much at standard retailers.

yes they are, but factor in the warranty you get from the seller, and as long as they are still in business at the end of the warranty you are still quids in. Alternatively, buy a 3rd party warranty and it still won't cost you £1000...

For the USA, would suggest this site

http://www.canonpricewatch.com/product/05701/Canon-EOS-5Ds-price.html

or http://www.photoprice.ca/product/05701/Canon-EOS-5Ds-price.html - even though it is Canadian it has US prices and sometimes history

Alternatively, use Camel within Amazon which will track historic prices and alert based on a threshold.

I'm still curious if Canon would do an updated version in 2017 in a 1xx body with an enhanced sensor, but all my purchases are on hold until I see what Canon release in early 2016. A grey import version of the 5Ds either through the US or here in the UK is certainly a possibility if the price stays a 1/3rd lower than the UK retail prices.
