Question for anybody who has had the chance to shoot with the 5DS and 5DSR for landscapes......I saw the review on TDP and it certainly looks like the dsr is a little sharper.

Having said that, if you shot with the 5DS, with good sharpening, could you get pretty much the same results? Especially if you are at f11/13 or so? Again, we are talking juts landscapes, so i am not worried about too much moire.

It looks like for my use (landscapes) the dsr is a little better, but availability is a lot poorer (can't find one right now). Just wondering if an in stock DS would likely give pretty comparable results, or if I would regret that decision in a few months. I don't need it tomorrow, but if there is no practical difference then I may as well get the DS and learn how to use it at leisure.

Who knows, maybe just waiting a little for availabilty to get better and price to drop a little and see what the 5d4 is all about makes more sense.

Appreciate any thoughts on this.

Am really interested in this too

I am predominantly shooting landscapes, with occasional studio fashion/portraiture
so low ISO almost always

And looking at this thread: http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=26787.0
Is the 1ds a better consideration?

I will be printing.

I am after IQ (no video, no crazy action, 99% tripod mounted)

You probably won't see much difference between the two cameras at those apertures. The R may give you a little more detail, but some of that will be false detail. Your best bet is to run a test using your own lenses. I haven't done that yet, but plan on doing it in the next week if my local camera store has a demo unit.

Why would you settle for the second best in details if you don't need the DS bc. you don't work with a lot of subjects where moire is a problem? I mean the increase of 10% in detail is quite a bit if it costs you only 200USD: http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2015/06/canon-5ds-and-5ds-r-initial-resolution-tests

Many ppl. upgrade lenses for such an increase (or maybe a little bit more) but that is usually a lot more of investment ...

Summing it up from different reviews I have read...

the 5Ds and r both need really great glass to get the best from them. With adjustments, you can make the sharpening difference between the two almost impossible to see, but strait from the camera the 5DSr is the clear winner.

if you print 12x16 and larger, they are saying you see a difference in print quality, and the larger you go, the more obvious it is. (dependent on the printer ability, of course)

shooting at f11/13 is not optimal to the camera - f5.6-f8 is - depending on the lens, and some lenses f8 will start showing diffraction.

I don't own one, but wow, the shots coming in from those who do are stunning at the 100% crop level.

I want to own one, but I couldn't afford the computer upgrade to make good use of the raw files... Watching what the pros are doing with this camera is just unbelievable the stunning detail this resolves to.

I don't know how you can re-create information (sharpness) once it has been obliterated (blurred). USM etc. only accentuate existing information (increase contrast at various scales), which gives impression of sharpness. Although I have not done comparisons or seen it, I strongly suspect that USM 5ds and 5dsr images so that the final image has same perceived overall sharpness will lead to more sharpening artifacts on the 5ds image. The differences will be subtle, but if you wonder, you are picky.

An interesting question is the f/11-13 condition. Here lens diffraction blur will be at or above pixel size, and f/11-13 is beyond sharpness sweet spot of most lenses (1-2 f-stops down from fully open). I would think that regardless, you will get more detail out of a 50 MP body as opposed to a ~20MP counterpart. Setting f/11-13 on 5dsr will pretty much have the same effect as AA filter, or on other words, the blur from AA filter is only a minor part of overall blur at f/11-13. I don't have data for this, but sounds right to me.

So the question is, do you want to have sharpness edge at open or optimum f-stop with 5dsr or not. I have a 5dsr on order for that very reason.
