Once version II is shipping, ask again and someone just might be able to give a comparison. They are forecast to start shipping in December.

Biggest difference is the weight. The ver 1 weighs 12 lbs and the ver 2 will be significantly less. Latest word that I've heard is that the 500 II and the 600 II won't be available till the spring of 2012. I'm relaying what I've read and not officially from anyone who may have better information. Most likely to agencies first in time for the 2012 Olympics. With consumer availabilty in the summer of 2012.

I picked up the ver 1 of the 600 at a camera show and could not believe the weight of the lens. The lens would probably need a series 5 Gitzo tripod and gimbal head. To say the ver 1 was heavy is an understatement in my opinion.

@neuro & mt sp - oops. Thanks guys.

@texphoto because of the autofocus speed slowing with the TC. Needs to be super fast for the job we need.

@photophreek thanks mate. Weight isn't a problem it will be on a mount with gyro stabilizer.
