85mm f/1.2L II soft touch.

So I just picked up this lens. Um, it is sick.

My point of posting is to just bring up an aspect of the lens' design. The underside of the lens has like a soft-touch coating on it. I was just surprised when I first held it because no other Canon lens I have ever used had this finish. And I have never read about it in any reviews on the interwebs. Any other Canon lenses have this finish?

Also- is there a way to disable full-time manual focus on a 5DII?

I'll post some first shots from this new guy on the coming days. I have a feeling it is gonna stay stuck to one of my bodies for a long while :)

Love the lens..it can be tedious to use..but the rewards are great.
The grip coating on the lens is one of the many nice assets of the lens.
Yes...you can disable the Electronic MF on a 5D3. Go to the third screen of the AF menu. 1st item.
The MF is touchy..but I leave it on most of the time as this lens takes such constant focus fine tuning when the lens is wide open...(the feel of the MF is floaty to say the least). Sometimes it is just better to turn it off, choose an AF point on the scene and go with AF.
It's always dicey with moving subjects so over shooting is a must to get some shots where you nail it!
It is a fantastic lens. If you need something faster-focusing with good bokeh for action I think the 135mm f/2L is better or perhaps the upcoming Sigmas.
Enjoy the journey...its a lot of fun!!!!

I´m going to sell my 24-70 2.8II, as I don´t use it too much, and I have 3 options for the money.

Option 1)
24-105mm f/4L IS
17-40mm f/4L
600EX

Option 2)
24-105mm f/4L IS
Sigma 12-24mm II (had it on Nikon mount and it is a good lens)
600EX

Option 3)
85mm 1.2L

I´m amateur and I love my 50mm 1.2L and 135mm 2L (both are the reason for little use of 24-70) (i´m starting to use Sigma 35 1.4A).

Emotion tells me to take 85mm 1.2L. Rationality tells me to take the option 1 or 2...

What would you do?

Option 3. You have the best mid-range zoom and you still favor the primes, so I can't see how the 24-105 will be used much at all.

Your decision should rest on your typical focal length choices. It appears that you like shooting primes with gorgeous bokeh quality. Then I assume that the 85mm f1.2 will be a dream come true. Then again if you are longing for a wide angle lens, because you are currently lacking in that area, you might want to pick up either a 16-35mm or 17-40mm lens. I don't think the 24-105mm will make too much sense for you. It will just sit on the shelf. You should rather pick up the 24mm f1.4 or 35mm f1.4 or its Sigma equivalent, if you dig fine wide angle primes.

+1, and I just did the opposite - sold my primes after getting the 24-70 II. The 85 1.2 is an insanely awesome lens and you won't regret it. The 50 1.2 and 135 are incredible lenses, but if you shoot people (who aren't moving too fast), the 85 is really magical for portraits.
