Amatuer Upgrade - T2i to 1D3?

Hello all. First post on the forum. I have been reading and searching though for a while. I am a hobbyist looking to upgrade my camera body (currently T2i). My primary use of the camera is shooting ice hockey and walking around during travel / holiday. So, I am looking for something with better / faster AF performance and tracking and reasonable / fixable low noise at high ISO. Most of my ice hockey shots are ISO 1600 - 3200. My first thought was a 7D, but given where we are in the product cycle, I think it would be more advantageous to wait. I figured I could get a used / cleaned 1D mark III for relatively equal price to a refurb 7D and then see in a about a half year if I want to upgrade to the 1D mark iv or a 7D mark II / 70D (whatever canon has plans for). I shoot a 70-200 2.8L for sports fyi.

Looking for advice from anyone with experience in shooting ice hockey particularly with 7D vs 1D3 vs 1D4 etc.

Thats a good upgrade, As the 1D3 and 7D are similar in price. The 1D3 is a great cam, just make sure you don't get a body with bad AF though.

The 7D has the better sensor and similar AF despite the point count difference. (Queue the people who don't scale images before comparing to say otherwise.)

If you can get the 1D3 for less than a 7D, it is a fine (if heavy) camera.

Just as everyone else says, the 7 is lighter, has better iOS, and it has an aps-c so you get better zoom. The advantages of the 1d3 are the 10fps and the focusing if you get a good copy.
I test 3 copies, all perfect, but the focus was still weird.
My advice is to wait for the 7d mark ii if there is one, because even though the 7d is great, pros who want a small sensor for wildlife want a better camera.
But in your case, a 7d is the way to go, the 7d2 will be way more expensive, the 1d3 is to risky, and the 1d4 won't have a major price drop till a 7dii comes out.

7D, remember, has the same sensor as the T2i, so noise performance and IQ will be familiar territory. Whether or not you want the extra grip too, you either stick one on to the 7D or get it straight with the 1D3, and also you might want to consider if losing video would be ok or not

I really am suprised having had two 7d's as well as a 1D Mark III and a 1D Mark IV that they believe the 7D is better.
Have they really used a 1D Mark III? Perhaps just 7D owners who are trying to justify their purchase.

Go with 1D III if the size and weight combined with your 70-200 won't be an issue. This combo will certainly attract some attention when street shooting though.

7D is a massive amount of features for the price and with the 70 - 200 its a real win ,truly.

If money is no object get a big body you will be very happy if you can afford a mk IV or a MK III


its all GOOD gear but you know what your shooting and how it will be accomplished best.
