GX-1 IV or bust!​

If there isn't a well-updated GX-1 IV, then who cares? All the rest are toy cameras for TikTokers.

The GX-1 series was a an advanced semi-pro camera in a small package with a larger APS-C sensor that delivered competitive IQ images, and had DSLR-competitive technical specs and flexibility as a back up camera but was small and light enough to be packed with your main gear without weighing you down. Canon abandoned that segment and filled it with point-and-shoots and TikTok video cameras. After waiting and waiting for years, I just bought the only reasonable replacement currently available: an R8.

I'm with this guy. LOVED the idea of the G1X III. APS-C, decent zoom lens, extraordinarily compact. AF and IQ let me down, though, so I didn't keep it. Just put a modern sensor with the EXACT same body and lens and I'm in!

I really like the V1 but I would use it A LOT more if it had a faster aperture. I’d love a powershot with a 20-70mm range and constant f1.8 aperture with the same V1 sensor.

For reference, just a 20-50/1.7 for m4/3 (roughly same sensor size as V1) looks like what's attached at the bottom of this post!

I'll take this, as well! Something that stays close to as compact as the original, with updated hardware, would be perfection.

i would argue for 28-90 to make it more useful for portraits. I liked the 35mm film compact camera with this focal range in the late 90's

"Super Zoom" is a broad term. It could be a 740hs replacement or a G3x replacement. Personally, I would prefer the latter. I have a P1000, and it is an interesting and useful camera (after you figure out its idiosyncrasies), but it is HUGE and in no way could be called a "compact" camera. A G3x zoom range with the V1 sensor and aggressive electronic lens correction could be close to the same size as the G3x and that would be pretty cool.

What I want is a high quality camera that has both wide angle but also with a zoom more like the 740, with a 40X to be a high end travel camera. If they did a Powershot V3 then it needs minimum of 20x but ideally a bit more zoom. I would pay more if it had wide angle, high image quality and with big zoom; $1200 to $2000. If it was on that higher end price it would be more like a combo of the 750 & V3.

The problem with your wish list is that the telephoto end of small sensor super zooms is almost always diffraction limited, so no matter how fine the lens is, it will be soft. The only way around that is to keep the lens fast, i.e. f/2.8 or faster over the whole range and that makes a 40:1 zoom huge, even on a 1/2.3 sensor. The Panasonic ZS 300 is a 25:1, constant f/2.8 and is stays decently sharp over the full range, but then, again, it only has a 12MP sensor. If you go smaller pixels and longer zoom, the lens needs to be both faster and much bigger. Physics is a hard mistress. The Nikson P1000, which has an excellent lens is very soft at the long end at f/8 with a 16MP sensor. I have both the FZ300, and the P1000, so I understand the limitations of each. My R7 with a 200-800 that is f/9 at the long end provides much better detail thanks to the much bigger pixels not being as far into diffraction territory, but even there, diffraction is a big factor in the result. Bottom line, there is no point in wishing for something physics won't let you have.
