My first dslr was & is a 60D. I shoot everything for the most part with birding being my favorite. For birding I shoot manual with my iso set to auto 3200. This works really good because the area I live in there are a lot of open fields surrounded by dense woods. A bird could be in focus at iso 100 one second then the next second iso 400-800. Plus I can keep my shutter speed & aperture where I want it.

Av & Tv modes will not let you get the shot you want cause the shutter speed will be too slow or the aperture too wide. Putting a lens at an aperture where it may not be the sharpest.

So it's easy to say the 60D has spoiled me with auto iso. I have a 1ds mark ii and even with safety shift setting it can't compete with having auto iso in the 60D. Plus it doesn't have the additional safety speed setting that the 1d mark iii has.

With that here is my question: For birding I shoot AI servo, spot metering, center point focus with the 100-400 5.6
Will the 6D be on the same level as the 60D for birding using those settings or do I need to look at the 5D mark iii to get the same results or better for birding?

The reason I ask is because I will be using center point focus @ 5.6 will there be a really big difference? Better or worse?

Thanks

The center focus point on the 6D is a definite upgrade over the center point of the 60D. As far as IQ there is an upgrade there, too. ISO performance is also upgraded so you will be able to take it even higher than your previous use of 3200. Probably the two areas you will prefer the 60D over the 6D is the articulated screen and the crop factor. Your lenses will be a little bit shorter with the full frame camera, but that is made up for with the improved IQ and ability to crop tighter. You did not mention what lenses you are using, but just in case you are not aware you may need to upgrade to EF lenses because EF-S lenses do not work with the full frame cameras.

Thanks FourmMuppet. I'm looking to upgrade to full frame since I already have a good crop camera. As far as lens go I have an 85mm 1.8, 17-40L, 100-400L, 18-55, 55-250. Still gonna use the 60D for wildlife for the most part but wanted to make sure the 6D could keep up or do better as for as birding goes.

I think it will be a great upgrade for you and the controls will feel similar. Just wondering though, any special reason you're keep the 55-250 since you already have the 100-400L?

Thanks AudioGlenn

I brought the 60D body in Nov 2011. First lens I got was 85 1.8 then 18-55 followed by the 55-250. The 55-250 stayed on the camera more than the other lens. I've taken some very good harrier pics with it. Then I decided to get the 100-400L and really like that focal length with the crop. Few months ago I got the 17-40L for landscapes & what not. I need another camera and decided to go full frame.
Hadn't really thought about selling the 55-250, I only paid 140.00 for it new from amazon. Not really satisfied with the 1ds ii.
