Hey all :) posted in another thread but thought I'd make my own because I'm selfish and want all the attentions! Haha.

I'm a noob. But I've been using my t3 and 50mm 1.8 quite a lot over this summer and the last. Quite happy with them. Here's a few photos I've been taking, I almost only do automotive photography. It's what I love! I know I'm not very good don't be too harsh!

Sorry if these are too big! I'm posting Off my iPhone. Not the best photos and not all crisp and in focus, especially the r32 vw.

I recently picked up a canon 10-18 as my first wide angle and it's WIDE! Compared to my 1.8 it's much harder to use and will take some getting used to for sure.

My current dilema is this. There's a used 70d in my area for $600cad, seems to be in great shape I went to look at it last night and am thinking about it a lot. For just general car photography do you guys see the 70d as a big improvement than my older t3? I feel like the t3 is limiting me slightly because of the not so great autofocus vs the 70d's far superior system. But is it gonna be much an improvement for me for stills like the ones above?

I've been told that the 70d won't offer me much of a difference. Except of course for build quality, ergonomics and autofocus. I'm not making any money and not printing my shots, really I'm only processing in Lightroom and a little photoshop if needed, then straight onto Instagram or Facebook.

Thanks for your insight!!!

Yes, it would be a big jump in general. Image quality at ISO100 will be similar between the two cameras, but at ISO800 or higher you will see great improvements in 70D.

The autofocus through the viewfinder will give you a higher hit rate for fast moving objects with the tracking option and up to 7 frames per second.

The autofocus via the LCD (Dual Pixel AF), is better than any other camera in live view, and together with the articulated LCD, lets you shoot from unusual angles without having to lie on the floor, or climbing a ladder.

70D has AFMA, which allows you to calibrate your lenses to correct any discrepancies with bright lenses as F1.8.

I made a similar jump from a 450d to the 70d, and with hindsight I wish I had spent the money on a lens, you may be able to pickup a used 24-70 f2.8 on your budget(equivalent 38-112) which would be my choice.

Of course the 70d is way better than a T3 in many areas, but honestly its always the glass that really makes the difference.

Thanks for the quick replies guys. I put forward the same question essentially to a great local photographer here (he's probably on this site to be honest) and he thinks that I shouldn't use the t3 as an excuse to my photos like I have been. Although it's a cheaper body you can still take decent photos with some nice glass, where as getting the 70d i wouldn't be able to purchase a great lens for it. Of course the 70d IS better than the t3, and its video and af kills a lot of dslr's he told me that i would be better off investing in a nice lens, preferably a L series in case I ever upgrade to a FF.

Your type of photography might be improved a lot by a FF. A 6D, might be a very good camera for that. Investing in a good lens, EF maybe a L, could improve your photography however I have my thoughts there about. The 24-105L or 17-14L never impressed me on my 7D. The moment I switched to FF, I really was impressed by the quality I got from both lenses at that moment. The 50 1.8 will also be a very good lens on a 6D. You know that the 50mm on a crop is behaving like a 80mm on FF. When I see to my background, I would say invest in a 6D and use your 50 1.8 lens on that camera.

I'm quite sure that you will find a lot of 6D cameras during next year on the used market.

A T3 and not a T3i correct? Isn't the T3 using an older 12mp sensor?

In any case I see it both ways. Yes, the glass is what really is going to make a big difference in pure IQ as either camera's sensor is more then capable. But with that said, geez, the 70D is just such a better camera in every single way that it would be tough not to upgrade, especially at a good price.

If you are 100% shooting stills and have all the time in the world to get the focus right, compose, etc. put the money into better glass. If you are doing anything else at all, I'd probably upgrade the camera and start to build some good glass around that body.

FWIW I upgraded from a T2i to a 70D at never once had buyers remorse. As they say, your mileage may very. :)

Good luck either way!

Yes I'm using the older 12mp t3. My buddy shoots cars around here too and he's using a 5d iii, recommends me a full frame body way over the 70d of course. He's actually selling it soon he said but I can't justify the price for one of those right now as it's just a hobby to me. It's stuck with me to potentially look for a used 24-70 f2.8 for the t3 rather than upgrading the body and using my current 2 lenses.

I feel like I need someone to convince me of what to do but I know ultimately I have to decide what route to take. There's good arguments on both sides of it

Hi zCanadia.
The 70D will give you more flexibility for framing with having the flip screen and DP AF in live view, also AFMA is helpful for shallow DOF lenses. Also focus and recompose can be a cause of focus issues if using wide apertures so the extra AF points might help with that. But the T3 (1100D) is not bad, I picked one up as a used bundle recently to separate out a lens (EF-s 10-22mm) and some accessories and sell on, I have used it a bit and it seems quite a nice bit of kit, (too small for my hands though) with a lot more custom options than I expected like back button focus.

Cheers, Graham.
