best lenses for 7d

i'm looking into buying a refurbed 7d, but i was wondering which 2 lenses to buy for it. i need one for general walking around shooting, another zoom for when i shoot sports. i was thinking Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, for the standard walking around one, then a 70-200mm lens but i'm not sure which one.

can anyone recommend some good lenses around the $800-$950/ £550-£750 price range.

I own a 70-200 2.8 IS II and love it, but it is way above your price range you are looking at. Could you possibly try to get a 7D, 17-55, and a 70-200 F/4 IS all refurbished for your target price range? The F/4 version is no slouch, but won't let in as much light as the F/2.8 version ( but the F/4 version will be noticeably lighter in hand). That would be a good combo i think.

yeah i'd definitely consider second hand or refurbed, it's just a case of finding them.

I have a 7D with a 70-200 f2.8 IS ii. It is slightly above your price range, but it is my lens of choice for most shots. I use a 17-40 f4 on occasion with pretty good results. That little f4 is very much under rated
You can currently pickup a 24-105 or 24-70 at good prices and will never look back

I just wish they would stock the new 24-70 ii all ready

You can get a new one at Adorama now for $1199 -- less than refurb. I just ordered one.

Don't skimp on lenses. Here's something from the DPReview conclusion on the 7D:

"The EOS 7D delivers impressive image quality across the sensitivity range. At base ISO its output comes with excellent per-pixel sharpness which, in combination with the 18 MP nominal resolution, results in exceptional image detail in this class of camera. In most situations the lens, rather than the camera, is likely to be the limiting factor."

The past couple of years I've used a T2i with essentially the same sensor as the D7. I've used both the EF-S 17-55mm and EF-S 15-85mm for general purpose. They do a fine job. Personally, I prefer the 17-55. I use a EF 70-200mm f/4.0L and it's outstanding. I plan a move up to the IS version soon.

Get the best possible price on the body, then use the best lens you can afford. No surprise there!
