Big whites

Why doesn't Canon ever offer rebates on the big whites as they do other lenses? There is most likely as much if not more of a profit margin in them making it very feasible to do. I guess it may be because they figure if you can afford that much, a $500 or more rebate won't stop you from buying it? I've often wondered about this because I don't think I've ever seen rebates on big whites.

Its pretty rare for Canon to offer anything off to individuals.

However, if you talk to your dealer, he might give you a price break. A dealer can sell for whatever price he wants, but he is restricted to advertising the price. In Canada, I believe CPS members get a discount, and you can be sure that the big news agencies get special treatment.

Because 90% (95%? 99%) of the big white market doesn't really respond to discounts so the cost of handling it would surpass the benefits. Those aren't commodity where the professional buyer will respond to discount by making the extra order.

B2B sales practices are a bit bonkers before you get used to them.

I once asked a question on a different forum, why we never see discounts at B&H, no matter how much equipment we bought. I wondered what the secret password would be. The answer came from a B&H guy, saying the secret password is "ask for a discount". It works at Adorama, I have not tried it at B&H.

FYI, the secret password to B&H's random sales is actually "discount". Put that in the search box and see:

I'm sure you can call and ask for a discount as well - I have had some success with J&R doing that.

Over the past couple months, the Canon Direct US store has had the 300 2.8II iS and the 400 4.0DO in its refurbished store at some great prices. They come with a 1 year warranty so that is at least an option on the shorter focal lengths. But I agree with others that the market for these lenses isn't swayed by $500 discounts.

I just hope those are there for the Black Friday 20% off or whatever they do this year....
