bodycount...

Now with my beloved EOS 5D3 having apoplexia after salt water immersion in the Indian Ocean the question of a replacement bod has arisen. I still have my Sony A6000 and I am learning it. Also, the 35mm f/1.8 lens brings up the edge that was not visible while I was only shooling with the Zony Zoom.

But to the Canon body.
First things first. Maybe it is possible to fix it good and maybe it will perform reliably after it has been properly diagnosed and the faulty parts changed. Maybe.

But if not.
My visit to eBay revealed that the 5DII is seriously overpriced still and that the 5DIII are few and far apart.
I have found a 5DIII at 1500 euros/1900dollars second hand and I am going to se it tomorrow.
This would probably be the most logical backup for the drowned and probably not 100% reliable 5DIII which only has 13000 clicks on its shutter.

yeah, this seems like the way to go but meanwhile I got other thoughts.
The 5D IV was launched. Focusing system revised, new sensor, touch screen (I hate touch screens!) 4K cropped video and so many bells and whistles that it will take a couple more readings to figure out what this camera really is.

5DS is selling at 2500 dollars with all its megapixels and high definition. According to Tony Northup you get Nikon 810 quality after a couple of clicks on Lightroom. the full resolution images are huge and my computer will dramatically slow down with the 50MB files.

5DsR is selling at 2800 dollars. It is more expensive because...I don't know exactly why. NOT having the anti-alias filter should make a camera cheaper in my logic but no.

I do portraits and sceneries. No sports, no weddings hardly any video.
I cannot stand things that black out in the middle of something. I hate it when something expensive just does not work...yes, I am talking about Sony A6000/Metabones/Canon EF lenses...

Would a Sony A7RII with the Metabones IV be an option here? I break stuff that just does not work...

Please give your opinions.
As things are now, I'll go and grab the 1500 euro 5D3 if it has a reasonable shutter count, less than 100 000.
Yes, I have the software on my Mac to get the count directly from the body, thank you.

What would Je..you do?

Don't spend a cent on a salt water immersed camera. It is dead.

Even immediate flushing with fresh water normally doesn't save them, the issue is not immediate but in time the corrosion will set in.

I have a lot of experience of salt water damaged camera gear, it isn't worth any time whatsoever.

Your experience much appreciated over unfounded opinons. Thank you.

My 30D got salt water sprayed...the damage manifested in my daughter's wedding.
Yes, you do have a point. Canon repairman said it might be this it might be that...

Sending it over costs money so does their primary diagnostics&offer.

That would be money lost.
OK. I'll get a replacement.

Saltwater spray and immersion are completely different. Spray is very local, so depending on where it enters and how much gets fried along the way depends on what it will cost. I am a marine biologist, and have taken a lot of pictures around, on, and in/under the ocean. Spray has never caused any problems in some 30 years. So sound at least like a half dunk ... ->

Immersion: just toss it. No point for salvage attempts.

Re 5D3/4 vs. 5Ds/R, depends what you shoot. It does not sound like you need 50 MP, so don't bother. It is my main body, but it comes at a price for body and also computer hardware. I'm happy with using my 6core MacPro soup can, including stacking 50-150 frames. It takes a little while, and certainly produces a lot of hot air. The 5DsR also requires solid technique (tripod, 2x focal length rule etc.); somehow I don't get the impression that you are a tripod shooter.

My other body is a 5D2, haven't used a 5D3, so cannot compare. Should be pretty similar to 5DsR. If you know the 5D3, then getting to know it will be a breeze, which is a major point in favor of it.

Why not a 6D? The sensor is just as good as the 5D3, it just doesn't have the better AF system that you don't really need for your use case.
