What would you get both being around the same price point?

I like my sports and motor racing, going to the Formula 1 in Melbourne every year I'm a little stuck with what might be better.

Being there's fencing around the whole track, there's not a lot of places with clear view so getting reach past the fence seems to be key for me.

But not just shooting F1, birding or whatever, what would be your pick if you were going to get either one of these lenses?

Servicing probably a good idea!

As for lugging around a heavy 400 has crossed my mind in walking around with it.
Shooting with a 1dx and 5d3, I'll most likely need to put converter on for that but extra reach.
("Cough" could always buy both "cough") ;D

This is a focal length choice, not so much new or used. Since you have been there before, which focal length works best? That's what you should get. If you are considering a used 400, consider a used 300, that might make your decision easier.

300 2.8 Should be a no brainer. It quickly becomes a 600 5.6 and then coupled with the 7dmk2 gives you plenty of focal length for both birds and cars.

The IQ on the 300 2.8 is incredible and it is much lighter than the 400. The weight alone makes this an easy decision. 2.35kg vs 5.3kg

I have used both versions of the 300 and the latest is a massive improvement on version 1. I can only assume the same for the 400.

Here is an image from the 300 2.8 IS II
