Breaking GAS

So, I've tried to have a lens free year this year... 2013 was a big GAS year, so this year i was trying to break it... And i've failed... BIG time. I've just ordered a 500mm F/4 L IS II.... I guess in GAS terms, this is drug/drink equivalent of a month long bender?

It would appear when i go cold turkey the pent up GAS eventually explodes spectacularly.... I think it is better for smaller GAS release for me.

The only thing I konw that can break GAS is having not enough money
or maybe having the discipline of a shaolin monk

I am longing for a 135L. But luckily I have enough discipline not to spend money that isn't free for toys like that.
But lately we had a price drop here in Germany ... *sigh*

I want to buy the Zeiss 135mm f/2 ZE that Dustin just reviewed so glowingly...but I have promised myself that I will not buy it until I have sold my Zeiss 21mm that I put up on eBay for sale over the weekend. So far..so good...but I plan on staying away from open-flame sources until the other lens sells!

GAS can be tamed, somewhat, by a requirement that one must "master" the most recently purchased item. It can also be tamed, somewhat, by a massive case of "wait and see what comes out next" (that's me!). I keep waiting for the 7D2. I was waiting for the Sigma 50 f/1.4 Art, now it is on perpetual back-order, why not just wait until the possible photokina Canon releases?

Finally, GAS can be tamed by a competing GAS, in my case, camping and fitness gear.

GAS can be tamed...I agree, now I keep myself waiting for the 1DX mk V. I'm good for a while without purchasing something.

Wow, you guys are crazy.

I buy gear when it's needed (and when I can afford it) without emotional attachment.

Canon, Nikon, whatever... Who cares. I just love photography and getting out to experience the things that I photograph.

You talk of GAS as if you need to convince yourselves and others that there really is some justifiable reason to buy something. (And then feel better when you can blame it on some silly concept) Why all the feelings of guilt? Happy shooting and enjoy the new lens. It's spectacular.

Agreed, and have been avoiding this site for a time now for that very reason... but now... well... screw it!
