Can Speedlight be used on 70D in Live View?

I visited my son yesterday and we wanted to take some photos. He had a canon Speedlight attached and everything was fine until he decided to use live view to get the camera down lower. The flash would not fire. If we turned Live View off, it worked just fine. This was shooting a couple of young kids, so we did not find the time to investigate. Is there something in the menu that would allow the camera to be set up that would allow using Live View and an attached Speedlight at the same time? It just made no sense. Thanks for your help!

Hi craiglove.
I know you specify Canon Speedlite. Is the flash Canon brand, or Canon dedicated third party? I ask as the only reason I know about is third party dedicated flash don't work if silent shoot modes are selected in live view.

My son is using the Canon 320EX Speedlight as he is shooting video as well. One would think that it would fire in live view mode, but we had no success. Thank you all in advance for your thoughts, Craig

Hi Neuro.
Checking for the 7D it says Canon flashes will work in silent mode (or do they automatically reset silent mode to disable) are you telling me this is not a standard condition throughout the range! Product differentiation?
That is why I asked if it was Canon or Canon dedicated! Oh well never assume! :
