Did some work in the yard today which attracted some birds, wasn't happy about the rain and overcast for the first test conditions of my new to me canon 100-400mm lens, but happy with the results.

File was to big had to export from aperture to 50%, hope it still looks ok. Was torn between the 70-300mm L and this, I almost got a hold of a 28-300mm L on CL - decided to pick up the used 100-400mm today and Im very happy with the results on the 5d Mark III.

Original photo was sharpened a bit, the 400mm wasn't quite enough reach but the shot still looks great after cropping about 44% of the original. 400mm, f/6.3, 0 ev, 500ISO

I love my 100-400mmL. I bought a 28-300mmL IS off Craigslist about 3 weeks ago, it is a great lens, but a lot of compromises need to be made with a super zoom.

Here is a really heavy crop(1:1) using the 5D MK III and 28-300mmL

Thanks for sharing, the crop is really sharp, Im happy with my 13 year old but new to me 100-400mm lens, but after seeing this I will keep both in mind, I think either way I would have been happy.

This further reassures me how much i love the 5dmk3, I love the switch to FF, I rarely shot telephoto in the past, which is what drove me to full frame, i loved my 24-70mm on the 7d but always wanted wider on average for all lens I used.

On my 7d I would occasionally borrow my friends 70-200mm non is L for or sigma 70-200mm and felt it to be to short but useful, i used it for weddings/bat/bar mitz/etc and it filled the need and am always impressed with the results of all canon 70-200mm L lens. I loved it for photojournalistic shots at events, but for personal use I felt 200mm even on a crop to short if i needed reach. Great portrait lens thought.

I was all set to buy the 70-300mm and if the price was right would have picked up a used 28-300mm, went with the 100-400mm and love it, its a used lens and from one day of use i love the results, I was weary of finding a tack sharp used 100-400mm, i was always weary of Ls in the used market, concerned that if a good copy was out there it would be held on to, but as i know myself, sometimes you have a great lens you need to unload to get another one that better suits you.... and with the new used lens, im very happy.

Anybody have any full frame samples with a 1.4x? Will the lens accept a 2x?

Glad I didn't sell my old 7d yet, tomorrow I plan to test the lens a crop body. Also I have heard some reviews that people didn't like the 100-400mm and rarely used it but loved the results on the 5dmk3.

I love my 100-400 mm and its old push-pull. I can't wait to try it on my 5d3. I use my 400 on BIFs and love it. You have to get used to having such a limited field of view but like most things, you learn to use it and wind up with great pictures.
