Even if these cameras did come out the info doesn't really point to why it would cause a price drop in the 1DX. There's a bit more to it than just megapix, FPS and price.

CANON will have to make also 2 versions as potential buyers are already split between many megapixels (a cheaper version of the non-existent 1DsIV) and less megapixels with less noise (a cheaper 1Dx). So if this rumor comes true, I believe that we CANON users will see some benefit too...

and there the price remains for quite a while. over here an 1Ds3 did not lose very much pricetag wise. As an amateur, 1Dx is definitely not my league, even though I'd wish to have a cam with these specs for ultra lowlight. But I hope the 5D3 will hold to its excellent low light qualities at a lower pricetag. Ready to go FF again...currently shooting a 30D.

The question isn't whether an 18MP D800 is in the same league as the 1Dx or 18MP D4. Rather it is whether a D800 adequately fulfills the needs of many or even most potential 1Dx/D4 users. If those needs are met, then, for those users, the extra capabilities and ruggedness of the 1Dx/D4 class of cameras are wasted.

How do you know? The precedent we have is the D700 and it is used by a lot of wedding and event photographers. The two that I know best have stated that what they want are (1) a little more resolution and (2) a lot more dynamic range.

I think it makes perfect sense since the target markets are quite different.

I agree with you that 1Dx and D800 is in different class, pricewise! What if 24MP D800 can do 8fps and 10fps with grip at 3K-4K price, 2fps difference can be ignored. Lost of photography will turn to D800, obviously the price difference can buy 1-2 L lenses. Same reason lots of photographies buy 5D II instead of 1DsIII.

Canon is in a very bad position, there are rumors about sony will release 3 full frame cameras next year, including a 24MP EVF full frame. I am sure they can do 10 fps since nex 7 already does. Again, compare with 1Dx, they are not in the same class in terms of the continuous focus, but price is a big factor.

The 5DII's non-expanded range goes up to ISO 6400, and while I'm not comfortable shooting at ISO 6400 unless I absolutely must, I find ISO 3200 to be quite usable. If the 1D X behaves similarly (i.e. if Canon judged the ranges in the same way), ISO 25600 may give results equivalent to ISO 3200 on the 5DII. Ok, I don't honestly believe I'll see a 3-stop improvement. But even if ISO 6400 on the 1D X is equivalent to ISO 3200 on the 5DII, I'll be quite happy - one extra stop would often come in very handy - lots of times for indoor shooting with an f/2.8 lens, shutter speed is ~1/60 s, which is at the edge of stopping subject motion; 1/125 s would be great in that scenario.

My personal view is the 1DX will drop to the £4200-£4500 price range after the initial launch.

They may even offer it at launch to make the price closer to the mark for 5D2 users who want more of the low light, improved AF, rugged body and dual cf slots.

Nikon D4 will be the competitor to the 1DX, not the D800 - if Nikon were to put out such technology at the discussed low prices, it wuld be ahuge change of policy, becuase they never dropped the price of the D700 to compete with the 5D2, even though it was clear they were being taken to the cleaners using sales comparisons between just those 2 models.

I'm not a scientist, but i genuinely believe that the timing of the release of the 1Dx is to hit the market really hard for next years Olympics and the wedding season. Stack um up and sell 'em cheap as the saying goes.

Of course, even £4200 is not cheap by a lot of peoples budget, but then Canon have the potential to hit the market with the 5D3 and 7D2 to clean up for those on lower budgets.

The 1 series is never the big money market - but announcing the 1DX sure has hell set the bar high for others to follow with their next releases.

A single Digic 5+ for a 5D3 and dual Digic 5 for the 7D2 wouldn't be a bad option in the current bodies, with upgrades to dual CF slots, next level of AF improvement and ISO afforded by the extra processing power.

Yep, i think Canon have been rather bold with their strategy and have certainly thrown down the gauntlet.

Oh, and if you're wondering - i would expect the above 5D3 to hit the markets for no more than £2500 and the 7D2 to com in at about £1500 (7D2 would still only be an 18mp body).

All those lovely Digic 5 processes being shipped out by the thousands...

I would love to see ISO 6400 and higher usable to prevent the use of flash in many situation since most of my shooting are inside...not to mention that adding a flash also adds weight to the body (an issue for me). I certainbly would use ISP higher than 6400 if it was usable...Clean ISO 12800 in low light from the 1DX would be amazing.

Now if Nikon does come out with a D800 and a D900, then the roadmap and the needs to have two types of pro or semi-pro FF boby really becomes clear. There seem to be room and a market for a high MP FF camera as well as a lower MP FF camera with better low light capability. This could be great news for us Canonian as this would meen the 5D II alone would not fill these two markets...
