Canon: 22 megapixels is enough for EOS 5D Mark III

My 5DII is up for sale.

Had a play with the 5DIII and 1DX today and decided to sell on the 5DII

The replacement will be a 1D4 or a 1DX or a 5DIII - there is no rush to replace it.

The 1Ds3 will become the walkabout camera

I just hope that people understand that more is not necessarily better.
The once who doesn't understand are the once who said "How many megapixels are your camera"
Let Nikon have does users I say.
I'm interested in the quality of the image.
Not the file size.

+1 here here

It is only a few that need mp. Had a look at the output from a Mamya leaf with 80mp - fantastic - those that need mp should try this route - I was very impressed!!!

One more obvious thing just hit me that N-fans never mentions.
Same size sensor but more pixels. Every pixel is smaller.
That in term means that every pixel get less light.
Less light means more noise.
How can people not see this.

At the end of the day, there are many of us here who only need to answer one question: "Will it be a fun camera to use?"
I think, and I hope I'm correct, the resounding replies from the 5D3 are going to be YES! Fun indeed. :)

+1 for the important fun perspective Redeye! Thankyou...

Any creative having fun in their work generally produces the best work.
I was like a kid with a new toy when I got my 1D4 and I love it just about every time I use it. It's FUN.
Once I heard it said that being a photographer beats the hell out of having to work for a living.

Fun? You bet; it will be exactly the same when I get round to picking up a 5DIII.

for most people more MP are just as usable or important as an car that drives more then 220 km/h.

even those lucky enough to live in germany can hardly drive more then 220 km/h regulary.
either there is speedlimit or too many other cars on the street.

maybe there are some who drive sunday mornings on a empty autobahn or on a racetrack.
but for the majority it´s useless.

but nevertheless 80% want a fast car.. even when they will never make full use of it´s potential. and of course everyone has excuses why they want/need a car that drives 300 km/h. even if they can only drive on US highways. :)

i think many of the crop freaks and billboard printer are in fact a bit like porsche buyer..... ;)
they drive a racecar but that does not make them a real race driver.
they are tech nerds who enjoy technology for it´s own sake and they make up excuses (i have to drive a lot, i need to go fast to my meetings, im always on a tight deadline).

but they don´t do anything more usefull with a porsche then people with a VW golf.
and they are not even much faster .. because the traffic is more important then the topspeed.

True, and...
In this case fuel consumption is file size.
HDD and CF-cards cost money.
You'll have to buy a new 1TB drive every year if you want to save all that data.

What made you sell the 5d2?

Noise isn't just noise. More pixels pushes it into higher frequencies, which are easier to remove from a lower bandwidth signal. The only problem is MP counts have yet to get really high enough to make use of this long established technique in signal processing.

The biggest mindset change that needs to be overcome is that every pixel doesn't have to look good in order to get a better overall result out at the end.
