I know that the new 5D is not out yet but generally speaking, does the 5D have better image quality? So far for the most part I am happy with the 7DMKII and typically get very sharp photos and can zoom in a bit and still have good quality photos, depending on the lens. I've never used a full frame camera and am wondering if I should go for the 5D. Are there are side by side image comparisons of real photo situations of the 2?

I shoot portraits and scenics.

I shoot a lot of the Canon 35 1.4 MKII and love it; this may be an ignorant question but I'm assuming with full frame, I would need to get close to my subject to get the same affect as I would on my 7DMKII?

The general rule is any camera with a larger sensor has superior quality to a smaller sensor camera. The 1.6x crop of the 7D II results in under 40% of the light being captured. The 5D4 should be very good compared to a typical Canon FF camera.

This is the only tool I'm aware of to compare quality of the two right now. Bear in mind the 5D4 images were processed using a beta version of ACR:
https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/image-comparison?attr18=daylight&attr13_0=canon_eos5dmkiv&attr13_1=canon_eos70d&attr13_2=nikon_d810&attr13_3=sony_a7rii&attr15_0=raw&attr15_1=raw&attr15_2=raw&attr15_3=raw&attr16_0=100&attr16_1=100&attr16_2=100&attr16_3=100&attr171_3=off&normalization=full&widget=1&x=0&y=0

As for using the 35/1.4, no, moving closer will not make it perform the same as with the 7D II - the perspective will different. Either crop the 35/1.4 images, use an ~56mm lens at ~f2.2, or just get used to lenses behaving different.

Comparing the 7DII and 1DX II, I would say that there are two major differences:

First, at higher ISOs the 1DX II seems to have quite a bit less noise, especially after ISO 1600. I would say at least one stop better performance in my unscientific comparisons.

Second, the new sensor design seems to have a lot greater latitude for under- and over-exposure, especially when you need to boost shadow detail. Again, to my eye, it seems like the files need less work when conditions aren't optimal. (I shoot a lot of sports, which can mean very high contrast images, where white uniforms have to be matched against faces that may be under a ball cap, helmet or other covering.

I would expect the 5DIV sensor to have similar, but probably not quite as good of, performance as the 1D X II.

If you are not shooting high ISO and not shooting under high contrast lighting (mid-day sun, for example) you may not see much difference. I like the 7DII sensor quite a bit, I think it was vastly improved over the original 7D, especially at ISO 800 or more. I have always felt that the noise of the 7DII sensor, while noticeable at 1600 and above, is much less objectionable because it looks more like film grain than electronic noise.

There have been numerous discussions of the basic differences in depth-of-field and apparent sharpness between full frame and crop frame. Some people on this forum have very strong opinions on the subject. I don't really care.

Unless you need the reach of the 1.6 cropfactor all Canon full frame options are offering better IQ than the 7D M2.
I'm owning the 7D M2 and 3 Canon full frame machines 5Dc, 1DS M3 and 1DX M2. The look of the full frame images are easy discernible from the 7D images. They have a much more three-dimensional touch. YMHO ;)
