A rumor showing a Canon Cinema EOS C700x starting popping up around the web and in our inbox yesterday. We have confirmed our initial suspicions that this is a fake.

The camera in the image is the C500 PL mount with some “work” done to fit the larger 34mm sensor and a longer base to fit the “X”, which in itself makes no sense. We’re also told that most PL lenses wouldn’t work with a 34mm wide sensor.

We have confirmed that the EOS C300 Mark II and EOS C500 Mark II will be coming to NAB 2015 in April. We have not heard of any other “Cinema EOS” branded products coming for the show, but that could change.

35mm full aperture open gate diagonal is 31.1mm, Angeniuex have a number of lenses that will cover a 31.4 mm diagonal. Vistavision has a 42mm diagonal (same as full frame 36x24mm), and 65 / 70mm camera aperture is 57.4mm diagonal.

So on that basis a 34mm diagonal on a rumored Canon C700 would preclude the majority of PL mounted lenses. APS-H has a diagonal of 33.5mm so is close to the rumored 34mm diagonal but Canon stopped making cameras in this format and never made lenses specifically for it they were either FF or APS-C.

The C300 /C500 are both Super 35. Cameras delivering Super 35 range from 27.1mm / 27.5 in delivery format but it has been rumored Canon will make a full aperture camera which as stated above is 31.1mm as currently the Arri Alexa XT Open Gate is the only cinematography camera offering this.

I would not dismiss Canon making a C700 open gate camera, Cooke, Zeiss, Servicevision and Vantage Film have all brought out new anamorphic lenses which are compromised on a Super 35 sensor. If Canon want to play with Arri & Red and be taken seriously in motion picture then a full aperture camera will be a "must have" this week Arri added the Alexa Mini it has an open gate sensor and is aimed at cameras like the C300 / C500.

Of course it was a fake. According to the "specifications" it included a Digic DVIII processor. The problem with that claim is that the DV III was superceded by the DV IV in 2013, and there is NO way that Canon would introduce a new high end product with technology that was already obsolete in their other products for years. It is common sense.

If people are going to make up rumours you would think that they would at least be knowledgeable about exactly what technology Canon currently uses, not what they used 5 years ago. ;D
